CEX - how does it work (ooh err)?

I haven't misspelled, I mean the shop.

I could ring them but:
1) I'm at work
2) People with experience

I'm after a new phone for say £600 and my phone is worth the voucher price of £165 which I will accept.
I obviously don't want to factory reset and then walk in hoping I get the other phone and they take mine off me just in case things go wrong with the new phone.
Will they give you a chance to try the new phone, give you a voucher and a couple of days later you get the cash back off the voucher?

Not sure about the 2nd part, unlikely I would have thought though.

What grade have you put your phone as? They are very strict with the grading.

They will check the condition and then make you an offer on how much to give you. You can then go off and factory reset your old phone etc and bring it back and get the voucher to buy the new phone. I doubt they will let you trial any new phones though

I suppose I could try it in the shop for a few minutes, ask them to save it for me (perhaps deposit), go home and make sure all my data is erased and then return.
I could do a complete wipe in the shop.

I sold them an amazon fire stick once which was brand new and sealed. They opened it, and gave it a grade B lol

What do you want to backup @SexyGreyFox , or should I say - CexyGreyFox?

Images / camera photos is easy, plug the USB cable into a computer and copy the files over. If you're using a cloud service, then you don't need to do that. Same with music. Back it up if you're using MP3 files, but again if you're cloud-based or using Spotify etc, then no backing up is needed. If you want to backup your text messages, then use SMS Backup & Restore. It backs up your messages into your Gmail account. WhatsApp and Signal are already backed up. For Google Play apps, go to "library and devices" and click on all of the apps to re-install them. I presume the Apple Store is similar.

I want to know how Cash Converters works. I have an old mountain bike that I want rid of, so took it up Cash Converters and they said in order to buy it they'd need to see a passport and two other types of ID. Yet right next to me there was an obvious dusthead offloading the proceeds of the previous night's burgling expedition who was handed a wad of cash no questions asked.

I work for them(but not in retail)so should be able to answer your questions.

You'll only be able to demo a phone in the store for a short while but you will not be able to 'test run' the device on premise of cashback if you don't like it. The company offers a 2 day return to voucher system where, if you're not happy with the device in those two days you can return for a full value voucher to be spent in any store or online for another device. They also offer a 24 month warranty covering the usual plethora of things outside of user error/damage.
If you're looking to sell, your phone will be 'tested' in store, this varies from site to site(and franchise more often than not) but it's usually fairly quick and graded as they see fit so you will be advised post testing of the final amount you'll receive. You are, of course not obligated to take their final judgement if you're not happy with the prices offered.

All sites are required to have a certified full reset with GDPR compliant software. This will provide a certificate that the device, linked to IMEI is fully and securely wiped alongside the usual formal checks for theft etc...but you're obviously going to want to format it yourself beforehand.

My personal opinion is I would never use CEX again as they give an absolute trash service and their prices are really high for pretty much everything.

You don’t buy things from there. Just sell them your old crap you no longer want. You’ll get less than eBay etc but it just saves all the hassle.

The 'dusthead' has likely provided some ID for a previous trade-in, so doesn't need to do it again if he's got an account with them.

A few years back, Music Magpie was the better option for service and trade-in prices for tech, but from around 2017 onwards, CEX was better imo. So I would have agreed with you a few years back but not now.

I've actually traded in stuff at CEX for vouchers so that I can buy something else from them. E.g. recently I traded in an old Chromebook, a Yeti Nano, some Galaxy Buds 2, a Samsung SmartTag and a Yi Action (action cam) and used the e-voucher to get myself a GoPro Hero 10 (which is another action cam). Also, the Galaxy Buds 2 and the SmartTag were free trade-ins for me because they came free with a Samsung tablet and I still got given £58 for them :-)

You sign up for an account you book in whatever it is you want to sell theres a stated price on their site once its booked you take it into the shop hand over the item stating the reference they gave you, a day or two later you get a confirmation email stating its tested ok (or not, but this is unlikely as their testing is pretty basic) and that the money is on its way to your bank account which arrives within a day or two, job done.
