CEX - never again!

I have frequented my local Cex shop a few times this year, mostly for selling purposes, using the drop and go service.

Depends what I’m selling but sometimes I just can’t be bothered selling privately.

I tend to sell things to CeX when I can't be bothered with any of the 'hassle' of selling online. I like selling on the MM but sometimes I'm relatively happy to take the 25% less money and not have to worry about pictures or posting the item.

I like buying DVDs and BluRays from CeX, it's become a nice thing that me and my daughter do on a Saturday! You can get films for a quid!

Final update:

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for your patience while I got this looked into.

After further review with our team, it was identified that both the controllers failed the test. One of the controllers had stick drift, whilst the other had the right trigger that would not press down fully when tested. Thus, a decision was reached not to proceed with the purchase.

Regarding the cables, we do accept unofficial third-party cables under boxed grade as well and feedback has been relayed to the store so that such instances can be averted.

If there is anything else I can help you with, feel free to write back.

So 2 issues with this, the store now says that both controllers failed. Not what they said to me at the store, nor what was written on the return slip. Also, they are now saying they don't accept 3rd party cables when the first email they sent to me said they do.

I've wasted enough time with these clowns, so drawing a line under it and choosing to vote with my feet :)

I've tried to sell to them twice. Once was a Rift headset which they refused for a scratch on the lens which I swear the guy behind the counter was making up. Sold it to Cash Converters instead for a paltry sum, but I just wanted rid of it.

The other was a bit more successful. An entry level steering wheel, which they apparently identified as something a lot higher range. Offered me £150 for it when it only cost me £50 new (on sale). I even tried to argue with them - are you sure? But they were adamant, that's what the computer says.

Not a big CEX fan, but I have purchased my last two phones from them. The only notable thing about CEX from my experience is their long guarantees with purchased items - my Pixel 4 phone that i'd bought from them had an inflated battery after about 9 months of owning which they refunded me, so I then put that refund fund towards a pixel 6 phone which I still currently have. I think some experience quality depends on the individual store.

I bought a Ally Rog.
The RBG and Sticks didn't work.
I opened it to see why not.
Found that they had done a "repair" on it previously. and both Joystick PCB's ribbon connectors were broken and the ribbons just loose.
Put it back together and returned it.
They tried to reject the return and claimed I'd "dropped" it. Yet there was not a single mark on the device.

They refunded me after 2 weeks.

Reminds me of the time (about 15 years ago) that I took my almost brand new Dell workstation laptop in. I asked them if they could give me a price, but they were busy and wanted to have a look at it first, so they told me to leave it with them and come back in an hour. I expected that they'd just open it up, check it worked, and offer me something reasonable.

I came back. They offered me £350 for it, which was a total insult considering it had cost me almost £1000 a few weeks previously. Then I found out that they had decided to completely wipe the machine and were halfway through reinstalling Windows! Just as well I hadn't had anything valuable on there!

Needless to say I told them where to go...

To give a positive side I've traded various consoles, phones and games in and never had an issue with them. Also bought many computer bits such as RAM, CPUs and such and the only issue I had a year down the line there was zero question on return.

At the end of the day companies like these are parasites that originally existed to buy stuff off desperate people for as low a price as possible. As the people were desperate they would take a low price as some money is better than no money. Cash Converters were the same. They really are not a good place for a "trade in".
all they did was kill the real second hand market and suck all the money out of it.

There's another one for Camera gear that keeps all camera stuff pretty much close to RRP.

it's like weird price fixing but totally legal apparently, probably because it doesn't count as a real monopoly even though to everyone in the street these places pretty much do have a monopoly on the second hand market and totally keep the prices from falling as they would naturally.

it's weird cos they don't even buy them for much money, they just take the absolute mickey when reselling, so why do people use them? surely you could easily sell something like like 75% of whatever CEX etc list them for.

I guess with camera stuff it's different because there's a lot of risk in buying a 700+ quid lens without seeing if there's moisture trapped inside it or scratches.

but to me it still sucks and feels wrong.

I wonder if theres any collusion going on with brands because it must benefit them massively to keep the second hand market almost as expensive as new

I guess if it wasn't a company doing it private individuals with enough funds would control the local second hand markets anyway, buying up all the good deals and doing it as a job.

Thus we can;t have nice things.

I think it depends on your local store.

Other than taking ages to pay, I use their click and drop service to dump all the old crap in my garage which I can't be bothered to faff around with on eBay, knowing what I'll get for it before taking it down there.

You've got to be realistic with the prices as they'll need to sell things on at a markup themselves, but there is no better way to get rid of old electrical items in my experience (20+ year eBay veteran).

I once tried to sell them a Xbox external HDD that I'd found in a drawer. Decent size, 2tb.

Went into the store and he said he needs to test it, plugs it directly into a Windows laptop and it finds the drive in Windows Explorer but refuses to open it. he declares that he can't take it as it's faulty because it won't open.

I said 'Well window's won't open it, it's formatted to Xbox. You'd need to plug it into a Xbox."

I was then given a look as if I'd told him to orally fornicate with his grandmother.

Why they would do that I don’t know, but never the less surely if you were willing to sell you would have made sure it was wiped of any of your data and clean install of windows, they still shouldn’t have done that though.

Bought myself a PS5 Pro and a disc drive today. Thought I'd grab a game so popped into CEX in Hanley. Picked up GT7, went to the till and the bloke behind the counter got the disc, checked it and placed it in the box and I paid. Got home, set the PS5 up and went to install GT7 and this is what confronted me, the PS5 won't read it.

Yes I know I should've checked myself, but the **** checked so I just assumed it would be OK (rookie mistake). The real kicker is I can't go in to tear them a new one until Wednesday due to work.

Drop them a mail now so that they don’t pull a “you damaged it, else you’d have brought it in earlier”
