Hey Guys and Girls

My PSU fan is doing my head in. Basically, whenever I play a remotely graphical game for a long time such as Dragon Age, my PSU fan kicks in very loud. I believe it is the PSU fan being loud as when I check my GFX and CPU fans they are not spinning fast enough to warrent that much noise.

Is this a common thing with PSUs being noisy? Something I have never looked into before. If it is a common thing, does anyone know if its dangerous or whatnot to change the fan in a PSU, or shall I leave well enough alone?

Thanks

BTW My PSU is a ICute AP-700AS, it was bought because my old PSU blew and I couldnt wait 3-5days without a PSU. Its probably a really bad PSU. lol!

Yeah, I wouldn't really trust a low end PSU with anything.

Better to invest in Corsair, PCPCooling, Enermax or BeQuiet.

OK if I was to buy a new PSU, how much power would I need. I bought a 700W because it was the only one in the shop I went to that looked decent enough.

If I was too buy a new PSU and later on upgrade to something like an i7 with a more powerful GFX, what would I be looking at Watt-wise?

Something around 600w will be fine.

I run i7 @ 4ghz and dual 5850, this pulls around 430w from the mains at full load.

Ah ok then.

I have noticed a lot of people in the project builds use Corsair PSUs. Any reason for this over something like the OCZ? They seem to be around £30-40 more but the cheaper OCZ seem to get good reviews too...

Well Corsair are quite well founded, having been in the PSU market for a few years now.

OCZ only started selling PSU's last year irrc, so generally people stick to what they know works well. OCZ do have a good reputation for their units though :)

i got a cosair for performance, price, reliability and 7yr warranty. all in all i felt it a good buy.(bearing in mind my rig runs 24/7 full load)

i will be buying cosair psu to power my next rig!

i can vouch for the OCZs.
mine is cheap (55 quid iirc), cheerful, modular, and works well and quiet.

on another note, ive yet to see a thread about someone RMAing one of these, whereas there seem to be quite a few of the corsair ones.

if you want to change the fan, i dont think its too dangerous (make sure you discharge the capacitors by powering on the system with the power lead unplugged as a precaution), but it WILL invalidate your warranty ... if you have one on something as ****tacular as that

AH ok then, so I will probably go for the OCZ one if its that good and no major RMAing going on.

Thanks for all the advice on this.
