After a look around today I think I'm set on a Galaxy Note 10.1 and a S4 mini. Thanks for the options. None of the stores I looked in had a 4g version in though, is one coming?
The Nexus 4 is still far bigger than the iPhone. The extra thickness and width adds up (insert mandatory "Oooh" here).
Nexus 5 is really the best bet. That said, if the G2 has official support from Paranoid Android/CyanogenMod etc, I'd say that at the right price point it is equally as good a choice.
The 16GB Moto G is £129 - £150. I don't think you can get the 8GB for under £100 now. It sounds like a perfect size for what he wants. I was surprised at how physically small the phone is, yet it packs a 4.5" screen. I'd certainly buy it over the S4 mini. But it is not 4G, if that is important.
One thing I have noticed, even though it's a 4.5 inch screen due to the touch buttons taking up part of the screen it isn't that big, although it's big enough. There's more useable screen space on the 4.3 inch HTC Sensation screen if you sit them side by side.
