Hi folks, just wondering if its a mobo out job to upgrade the HSF on my rig. When I got it last year I was watching pennies and kept the standard Intel cooler, now I want to upgrade.

Thanks peeps,

R.

It depends on what the replacement is. If it uses Intel push pins then you will probably get away with leaving the motherboard in. If the new heatsink has a backplate then the motherboard will have to come out.

Things like the AF7 Pro use the push pins, if you want to spend more and get better cooling then they mainly come with the backplates

Ive got the standard one in it just now, its running at 3GHz with slight increases in voltage but want to stretch the CPUs legs as far as they will go really.

What ones would you recommend for that (either mobo out or otherwise).

Thanks

I've just got a Tuniq Tower and installed it a little while ago, I was using an Arctic Cooling 7 (non pro) push pin design. TT only took about 30 mins to do with unscrewing the mobo sticking the backplate on then screwing it back down before installing the cooler. The cooler was easy to install although having small hands to screw the cooler down helps! :)

Now it's in, I have a good 10-12 degree drop in idle temps and about 15 degree drops under load in Prime for 10 mins. The fan is on it's lowest setting and it's inaudiable!

i'd get the mobo out even if you have the likes of the ac7 with push pins, so you can make sure the pins slot through all the way and lock properly.
