Changing monitor from DVI connection to DP

Hi knowledgeable types, can someone offer some advice please:

My current monitor is a 60hz 1080p screen connected to my R9 290 via DVI.
I have a new monitor arriving, 1080p again, but this time 144hz and freesync.

I understand that to utilise freesync I need to use DisplayPort, however is there anything I need to do prior to setting up the new screen?

Can I just (while everything is powered off) just connect the new screen via displayport, and expect to see an image on the monitor, or do I need to select displayport prior to connecting, in order for the image to display?

I hope I managed to make my question clear, and thanks for answering anyone who does

Should just auto detect it straight after switching on. At least thats how it works for me with an NV card and a gsync monitor.

Yep just plug and turn on it should auto select but if it does not just flick through the inputs till you find the correct one.

As above, it should just connect automatically. It's worth mentioning that if you have both monitors connected the POST and BIOS might display on the monitor connected to DVI - it seems on Nvidia cards this is considered the primary port. But if only the DisplayPort monitor is connected then everything will be displayed on that.

Thanks guys, new monitor is now connected, but I have an issue.

Connecting via dual link DVI is fine, can get the 144hz refresh rate, looks great. However, I want to make use of freesync, here's where the problem is:

When I connect via DP and turn my PC on, the monitor pops out of standby like it's waken from a signal, but no BIOS displays and it goes back into standby after a few seconds and doesn't wake up again or display anything (i.e. no signal).

I have noticed that the displayport connection on my R9 290 is so close to the PCI slot edge, that it may be that the DP connection isn't quite seated sufficiently, though it does seem to nicely sit in there and the retention button needs to be pressed in order to release it. Could this be my problem? I wanted to avoid cutting my case if avoidable

Can you flick through the inputs via a button on the monitor in-case its not detecting the
display port signal and automatically switching to that input?

Most monitors have a button to cycle inputs if they are capable of having multiple inputs.

I think this might be the problem.

Thanks, really appreciate the help. This was a replacement for one that arrived DOA so I've been a little nervous about it.
Quick opinion after a day of playing mostly Doom on it.
Normally I don't worry about fps too much, but now my monitor is capable of 144hz suddenly I'm acutely aware of my fps at all times and it's been really pleasing. Getting between 80 to 110 on Doom, with only the odd dip down into 50 when taking in a particularly busy panorama. But on top of that it just feels silky smooth, in such a way that I didn't realise how choppy it was before till it's gone. There was so much stuttering before that I'd come to accept it, but now it's completely gone, I'm not sure I could go back.
It feels as night and day as when I changed from HDD to SSD. An R9 290 coupled with a 144hz freesync monitor is great gaming, the best I've ever had, really chuffed and would highly recommend.
