If I change the PS3's harddisk, do I have to buy the PSN games again and what happens to the memorycard files I saved, is there a way to keep them?

Also will any 2.5" SATA drive do and how does the harddrive get connected to the PS3, I have seen that it is just a case of taking out the old drive and sliding in a new one but how do you connect the power and SATA connector to the drive?

your best bet is to delete all your downloaded content which you can download again, games, trailers etc. Then there is a backup option (in the settings menu I beleive) which will backup all your settings and games saves. You will need either a pendrive or large memory card to backup onto though.

The HDD is a standard 2.5" SATA drive but you are best to go for a 5400rpm as others may effect performance.

Once you have installed the new drive just fire your PS3 up and it will format the drive automatically for you. You wont lose your login details etc as they are stored in the system memory and not on the hard drive. Then you can restore your backup form mem stick and if you go to the PSN Store theres a link in the top right corner where you can re-download any games you have previousley bought.

Hope this helps.

Says it all really.

Only thing I could add is make sure you don't save the game utility data (instead of the save data) by accident ;)

my internal drive is a 250gb 3.5". soon it'll be a 500gb \:D/

Man why on earth are people putting some large hard drives in it, completely pointless unless you want to download the whole of PSN.

music, films, photos. i thought that much would be obvious
Not really obvious, I prefer using a hi-fi or PC to do all of that it's just a little feature consoles these days have to me, and I thought people just used streaming from PC to PS3 to playback movies? (Unless you converted them all to mpeg or whatever)

As for photos then, right....I never thought people seriously would use the PS3 for photos but hey.

my ps3 is part of my av system. it plays my films and when my pc isnt on, it plays my mp3s. as for photos why not? they need to improve the xmb but viewing photos on the tv is far better than a little pc monitor.

ive got no films or photos or anything else on this drive atm (except 3 hd clips) but ive already used 30gb. and i haven't reinstalled ninja gaiden on the drive yet. space soon gets used up and i think sony realised this and made a good choice making the drive user-upgradable.

I do like how the system is more responsive with a faster 3.5" drive though:)

OP - heres a vid showing you how to do it if you get stuck.

The guy doing it is really quick at doing up the screws - bet the ladies love him ;)

>1GB demo's, 5 years of Top Gear episodes, 3000 Photo's, 1000 MP3's and movies quickly fill a 60GB drive.

Thanks for all the replies.

Can't you just use an external USB hard drive? Not only making it easier to install/use but also easy to put things on from your PC

How did you fit a 3.5" drive in the 2.5" drive bay? Or is it hanging external?

I tried an NTSC formatted external terrabyte drive that I have - but the PS3 doesn't recognise it.... I formatted it with a fat32 partition though & it reads that just fine.

one of these (external drive):

and one of these:

that gizmo fits in the 2.5" bay and adds an external sata port. from there you can use any sata drive you like:)
