Changing spark plugs?

if you getting new plugs at the sametime use one of those while your at halfords to see what size u need
if not take a new plug with you

This is what I shall do and update tomorrow to finally put this to rest. I can't believe that it is so hard to work out which tool fits these spark plugs!

Dont worry too much about the coil packs, on the Passat I wedge them out with 2 screwdrivers, you can be pretty rough with them.

Thats correct the PRF6Q are the ones VW supply with 40k replacement interval.

Still doesn't solve which spark plug socket I need guys???

I have an NGK PFR6B in front of me and it takes the 10mm socket. Don't know how much difference that last letter makes.

Halfords Pro range tools are good. Lifetime warranty and convenient to just pop in and get replacement parts if they break.

I thought plugs were only ever 16mm sized, i.e 16mm hex socket to get them out. I've only got one spark plug socket and it's always fitted.

/edit checked my toolbox and I do actually have two plug sockets, one is 10mm and has never seen any action!

Well guys I went to pick up the plugs from VW. Turns out the originals for the VW GOLF MK5 GTI (2005) are infact made by Bosch which was a surprise. They are model no: 101905631H.

Then a trip to Halfords revealed that the socket that fits these plugs is indeed the Halfords 10mm socket!! So 14 and 16 were way too big!

Now I shall be installing them once the car engine cools down. Then a DIY guide for anyone interested!

Is a guide really necessary for such a basic job?

Point taken. There actually is a guide on another VW forum for how it is done on the MK5 Golf, but as this thread reveals it forgot the most important information, the socket size!!!

For some reason spark plug sockets are sized differently to normal sockets. A 10mm spark plug socket will not be the same size as a 10mm plucked from your socket set and will be the same as one of the larger sizes (Don't know which for definite as I don't usually bother with spark plug sockets)

there was only going to be one size for it though. having a guide for chaning spark plugs is madness. just get a haynes and a decent socket set if you want to start tackling diy stuff

I changed mine on my Focus for the first time last week. If you can use a socket then you can undo them. The spark plug socket has some rubber which grips the spark plug.

Just be careful to keep them straight as not to risk threading the hole. Bad news if you do! Also don't do them up too tightly.
