Chat up lines. Get in there my son!

This is only half true. They fail because your body language and tone is not congruent with the material. If you practice enough then this changes.

Indeed, but then I would say that as you practice it more it becomes part of you and so as you say, congruence is the key ;)

*Approach lady*
"Have you seen my elephant?"
"Pardon?"
*Pull trouser pockets inside out and unzip pants*.

If they don't scream, laugh at or slap you, you're in there.

This is not really "comedy" but I did go up to a girl once and just said "I just wanted to say: wow! That's it! :) Have a wonderful evening" or something like that and just walk away.. aparently she just stood there with a look of confusion followed by a big smile, ok so it didn't get me anywhere, but boy it was worth it for that smile. :) She and I did share a few drinks later that evening as she thought I was "lovely", but Iv'e never been into the whole "pulling/one night stand" scene so never made anything of it, however she ended up being one of my best mates at uni and as a result met a lot of her equally stunning friends which did prove more than satisfactory ;) So sometimes putting the groundwork in is more beneficial than a quick fix ;)

Epic Win!

A mate seems to do very well by pretending to be a hair dresser lol. Sounds stupid but he get their attention buy asking them where they had their hair done. When they ask 'why' he comes out with some random crap about styles. This gets the conversation going and usually allows him to touch their hair. I guess it must build up some kind of trust as before you know it they're talking like best mates. He seems to have a fairly good ratio of hits to misses.

Personally I've not got the guts to try anything like that which is why I never pull lol.

There was an even older thread which had one of the best ones ive ver heard in it.

"I want to cover you in thermal paste and overclock you till you BSOD!"

Being direct can work well if you have the right frame of mind. You shouldn't just walk away though, stay there until you get blown out or pull her. Follow it up with something simple like "I'm <so and so>" and then shake her hand and start chatting.

All a chat up line is, is something that lets you get your foot in the door.

Oh I've never been interested in chatting up women, I find women very easy to chat to. It's just something I had decided to do one day as this girl was very very attractive. I can do the small talk thing and have no problems getting my foot in the door so to speak, but as you say you need the right frame of mind and you have to be confident in yourself. Though I've had a shakey year, in general I feel quite comfortable in my own skin. It does help being rather dashing and interesting ;) :p
