saab aero great car, lets not forget they ignored general motors and made it their own.
My Saab Convertible V6 was awesome, 318bhp/444lbs of torque, silky auto gearbox, zero problems and I sold mine for £3500 with 72k on it. Was A1 mint. Great cars!!! Personaly ion convertible for under 10k, a low mileage Saab Aero V6 with the auto is the perfect car. However if you want something newer the Volvo would be my 2nd choice... simply because it's got a little class and will be solid and not be built cheapo like the BMW's. Plus they have good leg room in them.

I hate BMW's but.. what about this which gives quite a bit of rear leg room:

Or a Mini Works... not much room though...

or a Lexus...

but for me, I've be going Volvo just because the BMW and Mini will fallapart... and the Lexus is an aquired taste...

Only downside is, don't buy a diesel convertible... they're horrific. Nice smooth petrol is what you want with ya top down! hence V6's are a nice comprimise. Great engines and quiet and power and nice and quiet

can get celica convertibles for less than grand these days:

Was the seventh gen convertible ever released in the UK? I don't ever recall seeing one on the road.

We're gonna need a bit more info.

How old are you willing to look at?
Is performance a consideration?
Milage?
How many miles is she likely to do?
All fair points.
2012onwards or that ‘generation’ of car. The late 2000’s look really dated now

performance not an issue but must be auto.

miles will be around 5k

needs to look ‘nice’

What could possibly go wrong?!

A more serious suggestion would be to look at the Abarth 595C. There seem to be a few to choose from in this price range and I like them a lot!

There’s also OcUK’s favourite E46 M3 with lol mileage on there too, but perhaps that’s for another day.
Hate the Fiat 500 and the 595c isn’t what I’d call a convertible. Looks like a top-gear job where the roof panel is swapped for a curtain.
Is the 4 seater requirement there to actually seat 4 people? I see many of these convertibles with zero legroom in the rear. Maybe it's just the front seats pushed back.
It needs to seat 2 kids in the back that don’t have car seats.

I’ve shown some pictures of the options. The mini was high up the list but I’m not sure there’s actually enough room to sit in the back. The a3 1.8t cab was the highest followed by the 1 series. The 3 series and the A5 were too long.
Any engines to particularly avoid in the a3?

Assuming the convertibles are a similar size to the hatchbacks, you need to be an amputee to fit in the back. Also you cant even fit a medium-large sized suitcase in the boot, which really is a pain.
