cheap server

I understand (second hand) that a breaker was tripped which took out their router(s) causing them to drop completely off of the net (we weren't seeing their prefixes at all from any of our upstreams).
Ouch

That would seem to be that they have all the important stuff in one rack? :S

I have a server for 85 quid from Wisehosting.co.uk.
They have their boxes in iPHouse and at a guess its something to do with Rapidswitch as my bos went awol about the same time as people above have said :)

For the price I can't complain though - at a guess you can get cheaper....reading this with interest as I am also looking elsewhere for a box as Wisehosting support isn't 24/7...not the best when things go bang :)

M.

Depends what you mean by support. If you want to email at 4am asking how to configure Outlook Express and have an answer by 4:10am, you're going to have to pay a *lot* of money for the privilege. Emergency 24/7 support (server down scenarios, etc) is generally taken as a given even on a budget server however actually getting hold of that support can be a little tricky with some providers.

ok i have decided to go for the vps route! now which company 2hostuk or web fusion! + linux or windows based vps?

This would depend on your requirements. Do you need .NET support? If not a linux VPS will be cheaper.

WebFusion is part of Pipex IIRC, which whilst it means they're part of a big company, may simply mean that you're a number on the books... and a rather small number at that. With 2host you'll get a quality, personaly service.

ok i see 1&1 internet do a value server for £35 inclusive per month with 40gb hdd 256mb ram and 25gb data transfer! is this any good?

like i said befor all i need is a cheap server that will support max 25-40 sites at a time running its on dns management and mailbox server hopefully with plesk.

Sorry, i didnt read your other post. If you only need to transfer 25gb then i doubt the tasks are very demanding and it would be fine. You would probably be better off with a vds solution as others have suggested unless you really need the disk space.

i recommed http://www.hosting365.com/servers.php which may not be the cheapest but always provide superb service. Bear in mind that the prices dont include a control panel which i think you may need. consider a managed plan if you are not confident managing a dedicated server. or even a good reseller hosting plan.

sorry for being such an arse but im looking for cheap with a good ish spec with good software ie plesk and fedora core

If you only need it for 20-40 websites a VPS would be much better. At your budget your going to get a crap server resulting in poor service.

Did you look at www.forum2.co.uk?
