Cheap track car for noobie

Maybe in Florida where every driveway is the size of a strip mall parking lot.

In the UK where space is a premium you can fit a car into a smaller "space" than a trailer.

Also, having your car parked on your driveway looks a lot more appealing than having a trailer parked there all year round.

We have a neighbour who has a 4 wheeler caravan parked outside their house blocking all sun light for most likely 300+ days of the year. I thought about a trailer myself but unless I could somehow store it on its side and slide it down the side of the house then I will not bother as it would be an eye sore.

Clio 172 Cup - No other cars need apply, unless you want RWD drift fun as well, then MX5 MK2 1.8.

Ive had many track day cars over the years including a fully stripped out, caged, evo rear diff 328 E36 and the Clio around the track would destroy it!

I should add, in the last track day I done in the Clio the only thing which overtook me was a Radical and 1 Caterham, the cars I was passing on a pretty standard mechanical wise car was impressive!

I know the 323i won't be as fast as a clio 172 around the track but i can see my self enjoying the car more

when i had my clio 172, it was my daily, and i took it to Bebford Autodrome, and I had loads of fun, when it started raining, there was only about 4 of us on track, great fun !!

Every track day i've done there's been a guy in a tatty looking Clio who just destroys everything else there. I'm tempted to get one after im bored of my Impreza for a track/hoon car.

buy somthing a little fast to begin with a 323 isnt anything special

as said somthing like a clio 172 etc will be a goon around all tracks a 323 will be gutless, handle rubbish, and in the wet will not be good at all

For the first track day, all I would do is a full service, pads (not EBC Yellow's!!) and fluid, and maybe tyres if the ones it came on were rubbish. Get used to it and spend time evolving it, as that's where a lot of the fun is.

any reason why not change the pads or tyres?

change pads and tyres if yours are duff

new tyres are not great on track as the rubber blocks get hot quick and move around the track a bit more than a half worn set.

I'd change the pads and brake fluid, i'd probably use the existing tyres for the first track day unless they're completely worn out already as it'll still be fun you just won't be going quite so quickly round the corners.

Avoid EBC stuff as well as it's all compelete tat, get to http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/ Ian the guy that runs that has a 172 or 182 as a rally car so knows his stuff, very well priced for the quality of stuff you get from him and he's really helpful if you have any issues. I'd probably whack a set of his discs and CL5+ pads on as they're epic on track and very nice to use on the road as well, not totally wooden like a lot of track pads.

Ok fine you guys win..... (and a few of my mates)

Will try pick up a 182 this weekend

You genuinely won't regret it. They are so agile and lightweight - they make track driving what it's supposed to be.

Definitely.

To do any track day you need good brake fluid and good pads as a minimum. Normal road pads will be gone within 3 or 4 laps. I'd heartily recommend the Mintex M1144 pads - I haven't got them to fade yet, even after 20 consecutive laps at DEFCON 1!

Keep the same tyres that the car comes on and just wear them out. Then get some AD08R's.

And, as above, do a full service inc all fluids etc. Use a 40weight oil as a minimum if you can. Stick with OEM gearbox fluids and coolant etc.

Then go have some fun.
