Cheap way to run Eyefinity guys, Tested

How hard is Eyefinity to setup ? this Saturday a friend and I are taking part in a 12 hour race at Le-Mans using rFactor, I have ordered a Display port to VGA adapter cable and we plan on using both of our 22" monitors an Asus and a Blue H (Hyundai) via DVI and a 19" lcd tv which has a VGA input, is it a case of just connecting them up and the game will just pick it up and display things correctly or do we need to download software and set things up ? thanks for any help.

this cant work serious,i would love to go down this route but surely something is a miss quality wise or something.

do you have a vid of this working ect,and whats this adapter i would need, all the info would be great but i have a feeling this is too good to be true lol...

i want to go for this but i dont want 3 useless monitors that i cant use on iracing or my Rfactor.

I can't tell the difference between VGA, HDMI and DVI on a 60hz monitor, so should work fine in theory...

There is a couple of guys posted above who say they are using eyefinity this way, I dont see why they would lie.

Just google "cheap eyefinity setup" there are plenty of others doing it like this.

Hey rick,

Got your email fella, but as i have just moved house i dont have net access at home yet lol wont do for a week.

All i used was a displayport - vga adapter, its not active and doesnt need to be for an analogue, just make sure its of the cable variety and not a solid plug in adapter so to speak.

also i remember reading something about your graphics cards. Im using 2 x 5870's in crossfire and running at 5760 x 3240.

Thats made up of 3 x 24" benq screens 1920*1080

Im going to be brutally honest and say im not that impressed with eyefinity at the moment. The image on the 2 side screens appears more streched the closer it get the edge of the screen, and the height of the screens at 1080 is not enough.

For example Dirt 2, when a car is on the middle screen or just on the edges closest to the center screen they appear ok, but as you pull past it, it stretches more and more :(

Same with world of warcraft. If you look at a boar on the middle screen then rotated so the boar would be along side you, it looks massive.

Could be the way i have it setup at the moment.

I wish i had kept my single 30" dell 3007.

Hi datamonkey, u will get used to using eyefinity just give it time. I tried TH2G back in March last year and really didn't like it so sent the adapter back, but when I got my 5870 i tried out triple screens again and just approached it differently - If u actually look at the side screens yes it looks awful and uber stretched. However, that's not the point, u should only really be looking at the centre monitor, the side monitors just immerse you in the gameplay by filling your peripheral vision. Very helpful in racing games if you like the bonnet or cockpit view, pretty useless imo if you use the external chase views.

Also in BC2 i find a FOV of 65 (vertical) is best as it gives u a nice 'realistic' FOV without too much stretching at the sides. Dont know if there is a way to change FOV in Dirt 2.

30" must have been awesome but over time I'm sure you will come to love 3x24 more ESPECIALLY for racing games.

Also can yo post a pic of the passive adapter u use, as i may give it a try and sell my active adapter if it works!

I currently have two Dell 24" monitors running at 1920x1080 both connected via DVI to my 5870.

I'm thinking of getting a third monitor, what exactly would I need to get this (on the previous post) working?

GeXeH do a search on the bay for display port to VGA adaptor cable, I have 1 coming from the uk for about 20 quid.

You dont want mini displayport, and your third monitor needs a VGA input.

You need 2 monitors connected via DVI and the 3rd connected via the display port on the graphics card to VGA on the 3rd monitor for eyefinity to work, it is explained in the first few posts.

Ah right, okay. Thanks for the help. :)

No problem mate, I am new to this as well and when my cable turns up will be using 2 different 22" monitors and a 19" lcd tv  :D the tv supports a top res of 1440x900 which having tested on my monitor looks fine.

Anyone know if the DP>VGA adapter will work for a 4870? (I have 2 DVI, 1 DP, and am using the 2 DVI) I'm not wanting eyefinity (as I know it doesn't work on 4xxx cards) I just want it in an extended setup, I'm currently using a USB adaptor for my 3rd monitor, but it's really annoying, as any incorrect shutdown requires a re-install of the USB adaptor drivers, requiring 2 restarts+install time (un-install>restart>install>restart>working again) and it also doesn't seem to support monitor colour profiles (or at least when I try to apply them, nothing changes.

Cheers :)
