My son is 17 this year, so we're looking at getting him a little runaround.

Whilst I appreciate that insurance is different everywhere, has anyone got any pointers on what should be reasonable to insure?

If it's cheap to insure and also reliable, that would be a bonus too!

Honestly it's worth playing around as the figures are mental. The difference between something like a Corsa/Fiesta could be huge even though they're very similar.

Generally i found that bigger cars were slightly cheaper. So maybe a Focus/Astra might be better?

You really have to look around and don't assume that something small and gutless will be cheapest.

Job title seems to play a big role albeit the scope at 17 is often a bit limited there.

Seems to be a lottery, based on where you live, how many of those cars have been trashed, phase of the moon... For cheapness and reliability, Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107/Citroen C1 are basically the same car. Minimal maintenance and cheap parts. They are a first car favorite though, run some quotes and don't be surprised if something bigger isn't too dissimilar in insurance cost

you need to spend an afternoon with autotrader in one window and an insurance comparison site on the other :(

Make sure you add several older, preferably female named drivers as that seems to bring down the price.

Try different sizes of cars, i know most new drivers are in A and B segment cars but it's well worth trying some quotes on C segment ones as they *can* sometimes be cheaper as statistically less 17 year olds are rolling them into hedges outside McDonalds every weekend than a Corsa, Fiesta or C1.

If you want actually cheap insurance over everything else, classic car policies can be far far cheaper for young drivers, but then you've got to deal with the maintenance of a classic car and the fact that they're death traps compared to a modern vehicle.

As others have said, insurance can be a bit weird at times. I know when I was looking before I often found a brand new car for £20k would be cheaper to insure than a cheaper "runabout" for a couple of grand.

I'd look at standard choices, Aygo, Yaris etc. Try to avoid ones that are often used as "boy racers" such as Corsa's and Fiesta's, in my experience even the non sporty versions of them seem to have this association and higher costs.

Best bet is to find a few for sale and use their plates on comparison sites to get some ball park figures.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like we're sitting in front of a laptop for a few hours over the weekend getting insurance quotes...

A few cars that I'd thought of in the mix there, and a couple that I hadn't, thanks again.

It’s pretty quick once you have a profile on the comparison sites with the saved driver details etc too :)

Think I'll sit later on and make a list of registration plates (and the model they're off) from Autotrader, then I can just paste them in and compare prices.
