I've never had reason to try this out, but could anyone confirm if any airlines offer “compassion fares” if there has been a death or serious family illness?
I've heard these are about 50-70% off the usual fares.

Looking at Cathay Pacific and the like that'd still leave the airlines a long way from being as cheap as the budget websites!

Yeah true, just one of those bits of triva that float around my head. Seemed like a good time to ask.
I'll leave thread, good luck with the flights, hope your grandmother is okay.

Fraid I've no idea if it is true, but the direct airline prices rather than through an agent are disgusting.

As far as the panic attacks and fear of getting lost go, advise the airline of this when you book. They can provide connection assistance. I sometimes ask for help at airports due to my eyesight but by the time I get there I'm in no mood to hang about and usually just follow the crowd towards arrivals, never knowing if the assistance person was there or not. :)

Will have to ask my mum, is that extra £180ish worth the extra 13hour (x2 for return) more...

Just found the same flight, for £55 less, if interested

Edit - Found one for £520. Leaves Heathrow at 9pm Sat 29th, change at Pu Dong airport at 4pm next day, then Pu Dong to KL, arriving the at midnight Monday 31st. 19 hours total, given the time zone difference.

Return flight leaves at 2am on Jam 10th though, using the same airports, arriving back home at 6pm on Jan 10th.

Wow, very interested - yes it's a 1 stop but at least Pu Dong (I think) is a chinese airport?
Where and does it inc fees and tax? Even with fees and tax, it'll amount to around £700, which is brilliant for the time it takes...

You can do that? I thought they only do that with kids and people with disability pass?

This is what makes OCUK special - someone has a genuine need and many people spend their own time and effort in trying to help them out.

Kinda makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

If you can, go through Singapore, Singapore Airlines always come up cheapest for me. (WAY WAY cheaper than the direct flights)

In the summer I flew LHR- SIN and got the overnight train to KL- was really easy.

If you MUST go direct, ignore my post ;)

You are a STAR!
Now to see if any "special arrangements" can be made in case she lose herself or something (last thing I want is on New Years Eve, knowing my mum is missing somewhere in China) and also to convince her saving nearly £400 for an extra 6 + 10 hours return is worth it...

And Thanks Bes but due to various technical difficulties, my mum don't want to risk flying straight to Singapore.

We are Singaporeans and my grandma is in Singapore but (read my website for a slight summary) due to National Service and the lack of Singapore National Laws, my mum's not risking it for now.

Easier to fly to KL, drive to Johor Baru and cross the causeway if need be (or my grandma can be driven over by my uncle)
