Cheapest way to get iPod connectivity in Yaris?

Hi all,

As title really. I have a 2005 Yaris that I want to add Ipod connectivity to. It has the standard radio/cd player combo.

Is this an expensive job, and how would I go about it?

I know GIYF, but I can't seem to find an answer.

You plug in a radio receiver onto the end of your iPod - the other end goes into the cigarette lighter hole. It broadcasts what you're playing on a frequency you choose and you simply tune your radio to that frequency.

You can pick up cheap good ones from the internet.

I got one of those, the sound quality is kinda crap.

The best thing about it is that it also charges my iPhone, saves me buying a in car iPhone charger.

Would this work with a HTC Desire HD using Spotify? That would be perfect if so! I'm guessing no as the connector is different. I'd love it if there was a way to plug my phone (using the headphone socket) into something that would then mean it would play through the radio!

They're brilliant in theory, much less so in practice. I had one a year or so ago, and around home it was decent. Drive anywhere near Manchester and it crapped out, and could never find a signal that didn't have some interference. Mine also had an 'auto tune' to find the best available signal....bloody useless! The amount of times it picked a frequency smack bang in the middle of the Radio 1 band was frustrating.

So, spent £120, bought an Alpine head unit with direct iPod connectivity and control, and safe to say the sound quality is substantially better, and no interference!

I would imagine you can get something very similar.
 
It's quite annoying that your Yaris doesn't have a cassette player like my Focus. You can get a cassette which has a headphone jack on the other end. Connect it to your iPod and it plays through the stereo. The sound quality is much better than a radio one. There is a little whirring from the cassette player in my car but you don't hear this above the background engine and road noise. :)

Can pick the ipod ones up for a tenner, surely they just use the AUX port to transmit the sound. There must be ones out that you can plug an AUX cable into?

Yeah just had a quick google, they can be got from anywhere from £3 to £££.

Obviously the sound won't be great as its transmitted through radio but it is the cheapest solution without changing the headunit.
 
OP, I am getting iPod connectivity put in my Yaris this week from the dealer. Factory retro fit, not cheap though, £280.

Asked about how much that option was if buying a new car, turns out it would be a £450 odd option but it includes iPod/DAB Radio/Bluetooth all in one option.

Not just AUX but actual iPod connector so I get track control from my steering wheel and the car now charges the iPod :D

The only downside that it plays the songs in some "Playlist" order that I can't figure out what, it is kind of got all the songs in random lol I think i will need to clear out and put on only the songs that i like rather than my entire library.

I paid £200 for a Alpine BT-113, has iPod controls, bluetooth and have it connected up to steering wheel controls. Also in my Yaris.

It's obviously not very good if you have to do that. You should be able to browse it as if you were using the iPod itself.
