Checking if a house has a phone line?

I've updated that link, to take you to the free line install page ;)

On the subject of ISPs, always go with a LLU provider. The speeds are generally better, and it's cheaper.

Ah okay, I'll look in a second :)

Oh, well my exchange isn't an LLU apparently, so i'm screwed regardless no? :p

And to be honest my speeds last time were fine?

Set up your phone line ASAP is my advice, or at least get the ball rolling with BT.

I made the mistake of waiting until I moved in before sorting out a new phone line. BT gave me a 3-week gap between ordering and the 'switch-on' date. Then when that date came, I got a call to say they can't activate due to an existing line, and that it will be another two weeks as they give ample notice to disconnect the current service. Quite annoying.

Anyway, once the phone line is finally activated (fingers crossed) on the 28th, I then have to set up a broadband account. I've been without internet for over a month now, and it's getting to me! Will be at last another 3 weeks yet I suppose...

Heh, Couldn't do anything untill the house was ours...its rented for a start.

Also, as our agents are completely useless I had no idea what was going on with certain things :(

O2 broadband is superb, and if you have an O2 contract incredibly cheap. Just make sure using samknows that you are on an LLU exchange. If not, dont get O2 as its hopeless when its not LLu.

Sadly my exchange isn't an LLU one, never even heard of that to be honest :p

So don't go O2 as i'm not in an LLU exchange?

Still no idea who to go with, may just go with my old provider =/ but its costs a lot :(

Sorry to hijack the thread, but a sort of related question; I'm moving into a new-build flat that has a BT line pre-installed, so it's never been activated. Do I need to pay some sort of connection fee?

Virgin isn't available.

Check on the BT site, my new house has a BT line just it isn't 'live'....according to them there would be no connection charge, just the monthly fee

I'd recommend ADSL24, (even when not on LLU) they're easy to get hold of and don't charge the earth. No caps either :)

Getting the MAC code should only take a phone call. If they give you crap about requesting it via written comms, kick up a fuss.

Well no where near me is LLU anyway, so meh :p

Indeed, thats what I thought, but it took about four emails because they got details mixed up

Check whats available on your exchange here: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Easier than doing it on al the websites.

Okay thank you...

I just looked at ADSL24 and they have caps on the peak hours of the day :(

Too many bloody acronyms. :p

Tell me about it :p

Still no idea who to go with...its the line rental thats screwing me over at the moment... :(

Orange looks okay, but I can't check if its available in my area as I don't have a phone line currently...Yet one of the deals INCLUDES line rental?

ugh

okay...opinions...should I just buy the cheapest BT line I can find? then find a broadband package? Or other?

Hm, anybody know if Primus is equivalent to having a BT line? As some BB providers are picky

Or I could possibly do BT line rental plus O2 for less than i'm paying now with apparently no caps...

Or if it works Primus with O2? :o

BT should install a new line for £29.99 if you sign up to an 18 month contract..

Then £7.50 a month for 02..

Aye :)

Problem is the house im going to is a 12 month contract...so dont really want to do an 18 month internet contract :(

Meh, going to take the plunge today probably, god knows who with, guessing orange or o2 or something...I'd go with BT but they only do 18month contracts it seems
