Checking In On AMD’s TressFX 2.0

Global illumination isn't an AMD tech btw its an umbrella term for a type of lighting which AMD and nVidia (and others) happen to have libraries to provide GI type effects.

Not to keep dropping the same name in but http://www.geomerics.com/enlighten/ supported GI long before AMD or nVidia had their own implementations AFAIK and there are other libraries for doing it also.

It's nice and all, but I just can't seem to get too excited about a technology to render hair, fur and grass...

I've not played Tomb Raider, but I can't say I come away from any of the games I play thinking "This would be some much better if the hair rendered quicker and looked better". When that starts to become a niggle then I might start to care.

Still nice that things are getting better I suppose, even if I'm not that bothered by them.

Here's looking forward to better and faster rendered shoelaces (or whatever's next)...

I thought the main goal was to get games to where they look as life like as possible. Game play is the most important thing in a game for me but these technology's are a step in the right direction. I have to admit hair was not something i ever thought about when playing a game until tressfx brought it to my attention just how bad hair in game looked or the lack of it. Grass on the other hand for some reason is something i have always noticed as i like a good landscape.

After seeing Tressfx in action i now find myself checking out characters hair along with the rest of the graphics. Hair will never make a game good but it can certainly improve visuals a little closer to making games more realistic.
