Chemical attack in London...

Too many reactions to quote post but it’s crazy how people are blaming the immigration services and not the police or courts who should be raising concerns to deny these people asylum in the first place.

The immigration system that refused him (a known sex offender) asylum twice then caved on the third attempt when he converted to Christianity... sure, must be the fault of the police.

The police did their job, he was successfully convicted in crown court for his sex offence in 2020 and handed a suspended sentence, the immigration system subsequently granted him asylum *despite this*!

Not often shocked by things from the UK government bodies.. But this one has.

I can't think of a single reason in this day and age where saying you've changed religion should matter once iota to your circumstances

Exactly.

Imagine if an employer refused to employ someone based on their religion.

The fact that at the time he was granted asylum he was ALREADY a convicted sex offender is the biggest thing for me though.

We didn't let it go. London in the late 90's was a bit **** other than the nightclubs.

The food is better than ever, TFL tubes are particularly good now and the trains have improved massively. I felt more unsafe in Brixton back then than I have recently.

And the old Wembley Stadium was awful, I remember seeing Oasis there and the facilities were so poor people were ******* in the sinks

Unfortunately the wealth gap has only grown wider. London is a place I would love to live if I was a millionaire. Not so much if I was on the breadline.

My last trip to the new Wembley people were still ******* in the sinks, thought it was just a football fam thing lol

There is a fair bit of ideological capture among the people who play "yes, minister" that may well contribute to it.

IIRC we accept applicants at like double the rate of some EU countries and I do wonder if that has some additional selection effects too, we're seen as an easier target for rejected applicants (technically they're not supposed to apply if they've applied elsewhere and failed but realistically...).

This guy convinced them that he's become a Christian and will be fine, some other asylum seeker involved in a terrorist attack did the same. If the next government doesn't get a grip of this then they're just going to increase support for far-right groups.

This is complete nonsense, the UK has one of the lowest Asylum application rates in the whole of Europe

The UK has one of the lowest rates of asylum applications in Europe
In 2021, there were just eight asylum applicants for every 10,000 people resident in Britain.

Did I just read...

"he got got granted asylum the 3rd time due to converting to Christianity"?

Seriously? That is unbelievable. What an utterly disgusting system. I'm blown away.

How foolish we are to think that is a meaningful change to the applicant. :(

Considering the prevalence of sex offenders in parliament I would say it is entirely fitting.

So was it his own family he attacked or was it some kind of "hitman" contract?

It is a bit ridiculous that an applicant can commit crimes and then go on to have a successful application.
It really should be a probation period with a instant rejection. Doesn't matter where you come from, race religion etc.
Convert to Christianity....lol

That’s my “most ridiculous thing I’ll read on the internet today” bingo card filled in, and before 7am.
Bravo sir!
sigh

His home country probably persecutes Christians or something. Probably coached by some charity that knows the system.

in general, the home office deports any asylum applicant who commits a serious crime. So probably best to wait for an official information .

Side tracking to the id card question...
After living here 10 years of cards are so bloody good, easy, useful its comical to argue against them.
Most people carry a drivers license anyway....
It's such a weird thing to be afraid of

He may have claimed that he was a Catholic priest, sexual predatory is one of the requirements.

'We' are not foolish, the handful of people who allowed this guy in are idiots.

The vast vast majority of people if given the choice would have carried this guys bag to the deportation bus themselves at the first opportunity. The system appears to be under the control of a very minority set of people that doesn't represent the views of the country as a whole.

We is the UK in this context.

Yes I know what was meant, but it doesn't represent the majority of people. So 'we' is really 'they', and 'they' are idiots.

Got to ask why our asylum system is not doing what the vast majority of people would want in cases like this, it's meant to be working for us on our behalf as a nation.
