Cheque mate

I used to work at a cheque processing place - it is rapidly shrinking. They very rarely hire anymore, they just don't replace people when they leave, and have had a few voluntary redundancies. It's in a three storey building, they used to use two floors, very full, now since I've left they've moved it to one floor and it's getting emptier. The volume's definitely getting low.

I've been hearing this for years now.

The sooner they are killed off the better but I fear it won't be for some years yet. Although there is no real reason why they shouldn't cease right now.

Our biggest client insists on paying me by cheque. And not very efficiently at that. I've had 18 cheques, each with a covering letter, in 18 separate envelopes arrive on the same day. They will save a fortune when they are forced to drop cheques.

my gran cant get out of the house to get any cash out for herself. she pays most things by cheque! the gardener, the cleaner, me, my mum! she'd be lost without her chequebook

I actually quite like the old fashioned and almost novel way of writing a cheque out to someone. They are pretty handy when posting payment too.

But to counter my personal preference, I have witnessed the decline of cheques first hand. I have worked weekends in a shop for the last 5 years, back in 2005 I would probably take 3 to 4 cheques a weekend. I probably haven't had one for the last 6 months now.

I use cheques quite regularly. I appreciate the delay at times too.

This. I find them very handy for subscriptions, as well as the occasional fieldsports book by mail order. Not everyone is online yet, and even then most don't want PayPal fees adding onto everything.

Also handy for when you're a couple of days from payday and get the munchies. Takeaway pizza + cheque to the delivery driver = win.

<3 cheques. :D

None of the takeaway places near me take cheques. No shops seem to anymore, so i dont use mine. Only use cheques when paying business bills.

I don't see the point in them to be honest, verification by signature is completely unsecure system anyway especially with business cheques, you don't need a guarantee card. Thats real secure, yeah, it's completely impossible to forge a convincing signature, not.

Nowhere really takes cheques anymore anyway.

Never used a cheque, hate getting them, I don't like waiting days to spend the money, i'd prefer cash over anything.
