Bit late, but for anyone who is interested the answer is of course more variations of games of chess than atoms in the observable universe. A conservative estimate by Claude Shannon puts the numbers of possible games of chess at 10 to the power of 120 whereas the number of atoms in the observable universe is a mere 10 to the 82.
