Chilling adventures of Sabrina

I originally like Riverdale, but didn't stay attached.

Saw this pop up in my Netflix feed today and really like it!

Great to see Sally Draper - the acting name for the daughter in Mad Man - (Kiernan Shipka) getting a starring role, she's pretty good.

It seems to be a pretty descent combo of dark storyline and light heartedness. Way darker than the original Sabrina The Teenage Witch, which I assume it's based on?

Watched the first episode and it was pretty good except for one thing. They've already forced in feminism, LGBT and race political BS. Won't be impressed if this is an ongoing thing.

it's based on the original comic.

Ah, okay, didn't realise it was a comic.

Nah, about four episodes in now. Doesn't really seem to be much emphasis on that, just a minor storyline at one point about her female friend getting bullied for looking male, but I think it was really just a bit of narrative to help strengthen her bond with her her human friends. I keep expecting it to get a bit lighter, but it doesn't, still, it's keeping my interest.

I caught a Riverdale reference where they referenced the name of a local school by that name

I'm glad because that was literally the only part I didn't like in the first episode. Although the extreme background blur in some scenes is pretty annoying!

You know the target market for this is, like, 12 to 16 year old kids, girls mostly?

Those issues are part of life for kids. They're feminists, they're much more fluid in sexuality and gender, they're utterly woke in a way us older generations never were.

It's not 'forcing' anything: it's reflecting their experience.

Welcome to the new world :)

lol, yeah, I noticed that too. The DP/director definitely likes that effect.

They seem to have captured the captured the likeness of the average OcUK user very well too, so it should be appealing to this audience ;) :D

How dare they add things that are relevant to people! The cast should be all white right? The girls should only be there as love interests to the boys?

I watched the first 3. It's entertaining and I enjoy the lore a lot more than the high school angst. Whilst I do understand that the issues mentioned above are very much a part of young people's lives now I did find it a bit heavy handed in its delivery. Will keep watching though to see where the story goes.

There is relevant and there is using something as a vehicle for an agenda especially when it tries to force rewrite perceptions of what is "normal".

While it isn't surprising that some of these shows aimed at a younger audience deal with some of the issues they might be encountering at the same time a lot of people including people affected by these issues turn to movies and TV, etc. as an escape from these issues - something some of these people with an agenda seem to be forgetting and/or don't care about.

Watched Riverdale recently and it was pretty good, hopefully this is too.

I'm tempted to watch that now. I guess Netflix knew the 80s nostalgia/retro thing worked well with Stranger Things and perhaps the success of that helped with bringing us this new Sabrina set in the 60s. I've not previously bothered with Riverdale as it just appeared to be some teen drama thing, though the trailers suggested something mysterious about it - if there is a potential link to this new Sabrina series and it might get a bit "magical" in future while generally remain generally grounded in reality then it could be more interesting. (I quite like the way for example Game of Thrones tones down the magical stuff a lot, or at least did in earlier series)

it's based on the original comic.

Apparently not, the original Sabrina TV series was based on the 1960s comic, this darker reboot is based on a new comic from 2014.

I've only watched the first two and part of the third I guess the old virtue signalling is to be expected these days, it could have been worse, this series looks like it will be good regardless.

Obviously a diverse cast, strong female roles and some douchebag jocks should be a given since it is set in America and includes witches and high school kids. I certainly wouldn't complain about that.

I did chuckle when seeing that they've already managed to throw in modern day identity politics with "WICA" "I" being "Intersectional", so woke of them... nice touch too having Rosalind seemed to adhere to the 4chan-esq "we wuz kangs" meme with her Egyptian Halloween costume.

I'm curious as to what happens to her powers now she's made the choice to go the "third way" after episode 2... I mean it was presented as a binary choice, she signs the book or she doesn't an if she doesn't then she loses her powers. Ostensibly she's simply chosen the "not sign" option, so not exactly a "third way" yet.

Actually one more thought, where they could have been bold and potentially controversial is if they'd gone a different direction and perhaps had this whole Satanism thing as simply being exercising your free will and not necessarily something inherently dark/evil... I'd quite like to have seen that - it would be a riskier and perhaps more progressive choice given how easily triggered elements of the Christian Right can get in the US.

This is better, Riverdale is more teen drama.

Ah OK, I'll perhaps leave that one for the moment then :)
