lol having a book confiscated because it has a map that they don't agree with??

China still have a way to go yet, especially with the widespread internet censorship. search google.com and google.cn for tiananmen square and just look at the different results.

Yeah that was a fun arguement regards the book, he couldnt be convinced they werent the same country!

Regards the different google results though the point that tends to get missed out is that you can access google.com from inside china and see all of the pages with details/histories very much against China. The only site I couldnt get on was the BBC news site. All the other news sites were fine though as far as I could tell.

Done a lot worse... thats debatable!

There are ways and means we could try change how China treats its citizens without sending our army in.

I agree but why help them when 1000 people die every day in the DR of Congo. The world has a lot of problems and on the grand scheme this isn't one of them.

Incidentally, when I was over there in Shanghai/Qingdao, I couldn't access anything but google.cn. Even gmail didn't work 90% of the time, which was frustrating, as well as most of my friends' blogs and of course, BBC news.

Fascinating place though. My lonely planet did come out unscathed, though it may have been a different edition ;)

I've seen the backwards swastika used on maps before in eastern countries. I think it can also be used in a similar way of saying "you are here" or something to that effect. Although often viewed as a symbol for hatred and persectution it's actually more often than not an innocent symbol, when used in any other context other than stuff to do with nazis.

Yes you can compare countries, torture shouldnt be used, but the ones used by the CIA are quite different to ones employed by China.

You assume the UK does the same, please provide a shread or two of evidence for this.

I have no evidence that the UK uses torture methods. Can you proove that it doesn't? no, of course not. How do you know what methods the CIA uses to interragate prisoners? The truth is we don't. We know what they say, but not what the actually do so we can't compare it.

Ever thought this could be due to the fear that the cummunist party instills on their people? The poor are oppressed so much by the communists that if they wanted to revolt they wouldnt have the ability or money to do it, the poor are kept in abject poverty.

The poor are not oppressed, there are no secret police running around making sure they stay poor. Its a capitalistic society now, a lot of people are poor because of this. Its not a thing like North Korea where the govt actually takes all of your money from you. Taxes are quite low. Even in the places I travelled to, Sichuan provence for example, there are rich and poor people. People are a lot more open about politics than they used to be. If you get to know them a bit then they will often talk about it with you. I met hundreds of people overe there who admitted some stuff had been done badly before (cultural revolution) but like what was happening now.

The worst thats shown is the possile organ harvesting, they hardly mention he thosands of people illegally imprisoned, tourtured and killed simply for their belief.

I haven't seen any proof of this either. Its very easy to take such an opinion when such horrible things are said. If you walk around Tieneman square in Beijing, you see plenty of cripples and religious people shouting slogans or with messages of their stories, mostly anti-govt.

Yes they are a bunch of evil commies and no they are not like other European countries. Shanghai may not seem to be ruled be evil commies, the big buisness certainly wont feel like they are, the government likes them.

European countries dont go round raping, torturing and killing just because someone has turned round and questioned. European countries dont go round raping, torturing and killing on the grounds of someones religion.

The Chinese are good people and their government is made of the smartest of these good people. For many many years you will tortured and killed if you questioned the king. We sent thousands of troops to kill muslims during the crusades. Whatever bad thing it is, we have probably done it as has China. It doesn't mean that right now its like that.

Gmail worked fine for me all the time. Google.co.uk worked too. The only site that didn't work was bbc and wikipedia. Although it worked in the office. Annonymouse fixed it too.

We all know our governments see what only they want to see. They denounce 'backward' regimes threaten them with sanctions and force, yet refuse to do likewise with China. The country is simply too important to us.

Western hypocrisy should come as a surprise to no one, least of all us.

How long ago were you there?

I managed to keep hold of mine too, but then my bags never got searched that much. They had a quick look at my camera equipment once (I had took my slr with a nice big zoom) but there were no problems. I would have cried if they'd taken my lonely planet as I was mostly travelling on my own!

Isn't the logo originally a Christian symbol? Sorry to go off topic slightly

According to Wikipedia its a Hindu symbol, but on topic leave the Chinese to it this "perestroika" thing they are trying it is just going to collapse in on itself with the gap between the rich and poor in China increasing and the forced urbanisation of rural areas.

Spent may there last year visiting my girlfriend, who was teaching. Tacked it on the end of a trip round SE Asia, seemed to make sense before starting my degree really :) Even just one or two little phrases picked up made me feel more confident witht he language when I started here.

As far as I'm aware, I wasn't really searched - X-rays at stations and airports, but who knows where my bags went afterwards...Indispensible lonely planet in my hand luggage anyway.

*shrug* And I'm usually the first person to get stopped for looking suspicious..

I had no problem accessing google korea, my gmail account several times a day and the bbc (i think) when i was in china:dunno:

Were you at a ghetto net cafe or something?

falun gong is a crazy cult...i have no problem with them all being imprisoned...just as id have no problem with all scientologists being imprisoned.

Why doesnt the west try and do something significant?
Why does the west support China so much in lgiht of their appauling human rights record (not to mention everything else!)?
Why the hell have we let them have the olympic games?!

China is our workshop. Who cares if a few chinese get persecuted alsong as we get cheap clothes. toys and electronics.

I certainly don't want a trade embargo.

and why would the 'west' do anything anyway....personally i think executing children and the mentally disabled to be equally horrific...yet our best ally does that and nobody cares.

And that excuses horiffic torture methods being developed for use on them, its not just Falun Gong that persecuted many other religions that arnt state sanctioned do, ie Christians.

falun gong is illegal in china and all the chinese people i know (and its a lot) say that falun gong members are religous nutters - i wish they would lock up religous nutters in this country :p
