Unfortunately can be extremely painful.. There's evidence to show the sedatives lose effect before death occurs.
They should at least use suffocation though lack of air. As at least they die in happy bliss.

If they were to wake up early, CO2 accumulation would make for a very unpleasant experience. Been there, done that.

Asphyxiation via an inert gas would probably be more humane.
