Chinese GP 2009 - Race 3/17

Anyway this has nothing to do with China. Theer should be a general f1 rambling thread :)

Or at least a poll of who was the best f1 driver ever..... *quietly mentions Niki Lauda* ;)

Anyway China talk anyone? McLaren and Renult with revised defusers? Still no real chance of points? (hopefully...)

To me that is the pinnacle of F1 cars. It was the last time the designers had little restraints. That's not to say I don't think there's been huge improvements or haven't enjoyed it since.
You should have seen what was in the pipeline to replace it in '94 then.

I used to (and am annoyed that I no longer do) have a video of a private test of the FW-15C-CVT. It's memorable for 2 reasons, firstly an F1 car shouldn't have a constant engine note and secondly it features a hideously young DC with an awful curly hairdo...

:( makes me sad that we probably will never get any true developments again. Other than maybe when/if they change to electric motors. But even that isn't the smae thing.

I think electric motors would be as weird as a CVT gearbox. No real engine noise, not sure whether there would be gear changes (iirc electric motors have huge torque compared to petrol engines, but whether that would make gears unnecessary I have no idea)
I'd love to see great variation between the cars :)

Ah i only heard a roumer that renult had changed.... McLarens one doesnt look all that good either (its not very sculpted to actually be as subtle as the main 3, i predict there could be complaints about theirs being not sly/good enough)

That CTV car is creepy! Somethings not right when its powering along at that one note.... (shameish as it is a road relevent tech, but wouldnt be as good for racing).

My quali prediction is Rubens pole (as usual) after watching the 04 pole to flag win.....

Its difficult to argue against Button getting pole. The guy has been working well with the car and for his troubles has 2 poles and 2 wins. I have to go with Button on pole and the win, providing it stays dry.

Wow, that's weird!

As a driver I'd prefer to have a gear stick, I can't get on with flappy paddles. I'd like to see more driver involvement and the need for true talent. Although the CVT is a great development, I wouldn't say its a an F1 worthy development.

I'm looking for Button to make the hattrick, just to compound that he really does have the ability and that Brawn reliability isn't too much of an issue.

Yeah i know, just a little wishfull thinking :D

Funny read :p

Just had a quick go on F1 (PS3) at the Shanghai circuit. Time trail mode. Managed a 1:34:271 in the '06 McLaren with soft tyre's and normal setup. Nothing tweaked.

The back straight is longer than I thought if the game is anything to go off :p

Is there anyway of finding out which of the 'red button' channels the practice sessions will be on in advance?

I'm currently taping 301 & 302 so i catch them but im running out of room on my pvr

You are old-skool. :p

I've tried both paddles (semi-automatic gearbox) and gear sticks (with clutches). Paddles win hands down. The ease with which you can change up and down without a clutch isnt even funny.

I'm surprised that more road cars aren't equipped with gear paddles. I would've thought that by now car makers would've developed semi automatic gearboxes to a point where they could cost effectively fit them to mid range cars.

They're more expensive and not as robust as a manual shift afaik. Therefore only really found on performance stuff as an option for a fair bit of money.

Manual shift's are quite satisfying too imo, one of the best features in my car :p

Might go see what I can do in one of the 05 cars on GTREvo (only F1 cars I have atm - really want the 2009 cars for it)
