Chinese Grand Prix 2011, Shanghai International Circuit - Race 3/19

Race - Hamilton takes sensational Shanghai win
Lewis Hamilton scored a fabulous victory for McLaren in a Chinese race of excellent drives, catching and passing Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel on the 52nd of the 56 laps as the reigning world champion's gamble on a two-stop strategy - and a 25-lap run on Pirelli's hard rubber - just failed to pay off.

edit again, if Webber had had another set of options and/or pitted earlier from his hard stint he might have won the race.

as I said before and I may be sounding like a stuck record. I can't see this lasting, re as will get enough data on the tyres to be able to comfortably able to predict them, we are only seeing this as the teams just don't know how the tyres react. Come halfway through the season, or maybe later. They will have a very good idea and the unpredictablitie will go out the window. It will just be like a decade ago, where most do the same and occasionally someone does something different and it pays off.

possibly, but cars, drivers and tracks vary, also midfield teams will be motivated to use softs for grid position.

The track will change through the weekend as well.

Just like with Bridgestones, at some point they will have enough data to predict.

Of mclaren and rbi didn't have such an advantage they would all be using softs, so it makes no difference what the smaller teams do, it just means those two teams at most tracks can have an extra set unused.

They are all in the same boat and so will all do that tactic. The reason they didn't all do that today, is they don't understand the tyres yet.

But not all circuits are like we had today, remember thefirstgp.its all about understanding the tyres and once that happens it will settle down

Would certainly make it more relevant to the car industry.

More than anything I would like to see more big names like VW, Porche etc. Who cares about cars like HRT, Virgin etc. Sadly F1 is becoming less and less relevant.

Perhaps they should unfreeze engine development, but set a cap on the money spent on development?

Wouldn't mind a set limit but it has to be well thought out and easy to track, this is the problem I don't think it's in forceable. And 40 mill is rediculusley low. Again sounding lie a. Stuck recorded, if it was relevant and useful in other industries then it will get huge sponsorship, the current problem is it is just sponsorship for advertising nothing more. Which is why kers should be derestricted, engines derestricted, alternative energies written in the rules and aero clamped down on.

I've suggested before every 2 or 3 years reduce fuel by 5-10% or something. But make sure renault or other manufacture sell to anyone on the grid who wants to buy. So cheaper teams have an option. F1 has always had the top few teams, midfield then the poor runners. I don't see why that needs to change to this everyone close together wich is what they have been trying and succeeding to do.

If he pressed it, then he would be penalised. I expect it was a software error and as such no such outcome. I expect they are looking into it.

I'm sure it was said at some point or in an artithat that they have been told they can not press the button except in the DRS zone and that fia would be looking for such stuff.

If this was the case, I'd rather the whole thing was scrapped.
If the FIA can't find a way to govern it properly then it's a complete joke, it's rare for them to get anything right, I was hoping they could get the DRS system done properly.
I actually like it, with the current aero rules, it is needed.
If a driver wants to go round the track with the finger on the DRS button the whole time, why shouldn't they? It should be up to the FIA to stop the system being on. It's just asking for more farcical penalties and changing of results after the race otherwise...

I think it's because their is a overuse and to ensure people aren't cheating. I want it scrapped regardless it is a cheat device and is not sporting however you look at it.

It's not artificial as they all have the same tyres and allocation, not like DRS.

If you have watched the first 3 races they are all following much closer together than last year, probably thanks to no double diffuser and when ground effect returns it will get closer gin.

I think it's 2013 withth the new engines, but it's all subject to change.

I Know it's armed by race control but I am sure i have read that they are not meant to be pressing the button anywhere and that if they do and it works for an unknown reason the fia will be looking at it.

not fair? whats not fair about him being slow and the car catching him attualy has a chance of overtaking? oh, btw lewis didn't use the drs on vettle, he just drove round on fresher tires. :p

They have a chance of overtaking especially this year with the closed following distances, DRS is unfair. It is intentionally unfair and has no place in any sport. There has always been overtaking in every season.

Its not about easiness it's about fairness DRS is not fair, it is legal cheating. We can have easier overtaking and no DRS, they haveallready improved it massively by removing double diffuser, just look at the time gaps between cars.

DRS does not rebalance this, it is still available when along side and once past. It shouldn't be available full stop.

I would rather a return to processional rather than DRS. But what I want is no DRS and less areo and more mechanical grip, which will actually solve the problem and have fair racing.

We also just don't have the difference in engines and other variables we had many years ago.

It is going to happen in 2013 ground effect. It has also already happens, no aero sticky out bits between axels, higher front wing, reduced front and rear wings etc etc.

The cost is nothing, the aero has to be massively altered every year and any spare moneys invested in tuning, so it's a silly argument. As well as the above it has happened and is continuing to happen. There will still be aero that needs to become, it's just massively reduced.

The last race was tyres not DRS, the first race DRS failed at it's intended purpose which is a good thing.

Billions have been spent on all number of things that have been taken away, engines are a good example.

That isn't what we are seeing we have gone from over 1 second to around0.5 seconds this season, when ground effect comes in fia will have to significantly reduce aero to compensate.

Oh as for 2010 it was explained, double diffuser was reckoned to regain almost all aero that fia wanted rid of and replaced the dirty air. It's now banned and last race they where easily following at 0.5 seconds even without DRS. Once ground effect comes in (which doesn't cause dirty air) fia will have to reduce other aero to keep speed and lap times down, further reducing dirty air, as well as ground effect not being affected by dirty air itself.

So my eggs aren't all in one basket it is a combination of things. Ground effect not causing dirty air, ground effect not needing clean air to work and further reductions in aero. Which has all ready made a difference. Then we just need to sort engines, kers and a few other things out.

There's just no need, cars where able to follow at 0.5 seconds anyway, fia just panicked and rather than accepting double diffuser undid all their hard work last year, introduced this stupid system.
