Firsly, both aren't bad places to live in. I mean Preston is quite a nice city, my sister happens to be a teacher there, and I live in Bristol. Depends what you want I guess. Nightlife is shockingly bad in Bristol and at least in Preston your not far from Manchester / Liverpool where as in Bristol your your ages from anywhere. Nothing to split them academically, although for CS Preston probably is a little better.
In terms of academic quality though both are without question rubbish.
Consider the resiting exams option carefully, UWE might just turn out to be an expensive way to waste three years of your life.

My best adive then is if you go to UWE / UCLAN work your ass off, and try and get a move to Uni of Bristol / Uni of Manchester between your first and second year (this can be done and I know people who have done it). Socialising is an important part of uni, but betting a job and a sound future is too.

Well unfortunately thats just not the way anymore. You are EXPECTED to go to university nowadays, and now the government has started messing about with top up fees and all that jazz unis are lowering themselves to make some money. Sadly thats all tehre is to it, money money money.
University League tables can change radically each year, so take those with a pinch of salt - for example this year the Times did not include teaching quality in its 07 university guide...an obvious important factor.
Although it is unfair and harsh to call every post 1992 university 'crap,' it would be more beneficial to go to a more established university...But in the end if you get a good mark i.e a high 2:i or a first then it should in theory not matter.

Yeah its a sad time that everyone is expected to go to uni. Why can't the goverment just accept that university isn't for everyone. I'd love to see courses to train people how to be front line IT support for example.
BTW good look I here CSE at UWE is one of there better courses!
RAE is a great indicator of the course and university's strength's, although i thought the maxim mark is 5*. Like I said the RAE was excluded from the Times rankings this year so take that into account when looking at the league table.
I think DAVEM is talking sense, if you go to a below average University and get a 2:2 or worse than you're really doing yourself no favors. Clearing can often throw up some surprises in fact you can sometimes get into some top20 Uni's with C's or even lower. Remember the University's need to fill the places.

Only sports bar I know of is 'Roo Bar' just down an alley by Whiteladie's Sainsburies. Not toooo far away, but its always a pretty rowdy sports atmosphere with many big screens.DAVEM said:P.S. know anywhere decent to watch the football, tend to goto the White Lion Inn, but its a bit pants for the sport!

5* is supposed to mark "international class research" and I think the 6* star bit was to indicate that your a university is a leader in a particular field
If you want to get a job, perhaps UWE isn't the best, but, if you're considering doing a masters/PhD or doctorate then it's not bad as;
a) UWE do a fair few 'higher' courses, so attending the Uni for undergrad is going to help
b) it's an 'upcoming' uni with a great standard of teaching quality (depending on course)
and, at the end of the day, if you get a 1st from UWE, lots of doors will be open. Perhaps not as many as a 1st from Bristol Uni, but it certainly won't hold you back as much as people in this thread are making out. I'm heading for a 1st from UWE at the moment, and I have plenty of options for post-grad courses - some from 'red brick' uni's, some from polys.
Just survey your options carefully.
