hi i currently own a k8 hayabusa with 8000 miles on the clock with full history and power commander and mtc exhausts. the bike has been used through 3 winters and is starting to show it a little with a rusty bolt.

now the question is ive been offered a trade in of 5500 against a 03 999s or a 07 rl.

the 999s has full history one owner and 3000 miles on the clock and is currently on sale for 6299 with power commander and alarm.

the r1 has 4500 on the clock and two owners.

both will have full tax and mot and serviced. the dealer have offered 500 to swop for either with no bartering as yet and i an keep the cans and power commander to sell. im torn between which bike to go for. i like the idea of the 999s but am concerned with its age and resale. which would lose the most in a years usage the 999s or the r1. all suggestions and advice welcomed.\

this is a link to the bike

If its going to be ridden day in day out you would have to think the R1 would be the better bet, but on the other hand the 999S is a little bit special :). Has the 999 had the belts done?
:)

ive got a honda dominator as a 2nd bike so will only be used on nice sunny days. i havent checked but fairly sure belts will have been done.

Can comment as I haven't ridden either, but I've bought and sold enough bikes over the years to advise not to buy a bike based on resale, but on what gets you excited when you open the garage door.

thats easy then mate its the 999s. spoke to the dealer this morning and feels the 999 will hold its value better than the r1 and prob you lose much in a year and they are a yam dealer. love my busa but had it for 2.5 years and had old shape for 1.5 years so fancy a change

Have you ridden a 999 before ?

Its one hell of a change in riding position , style and technique to riding a point and shoot Busa ;)

i had a test ride of about 4 miles on it and yes it was totally different position but not as uncomfortable as i expected. dont get me wrong it wasnt as comfy as the busa but i could cope with it just. lol.
the busa handles pretty well for a big bike to be honest and powers nicely out of corners but 999 feels a lot lighter because it is and handles a lot sharper.
feel it times for a change from the busa and would like a ducati at some point.
im going to go back on wed and have a longer ride of about 30 miles on some town and county to get a better feel for it.

My last bike before my GSXR750 was an 07 R1 - had it from new and put almost 14,000 miles on it, before it's untimely trip to bike heaven.

I can offer input, though I'm not sure how well I can convey it, as I've only got ~4 years riding experience, and it's a while ago...

Some points:

There's issues with the revs/idle - it seems to affect the 05 - 08 bikes, and affected mine :( Basically, when coming to a halt at lights, and a couple of times when going down the box - pulling the clutch in results in the engine just cutting out! I had mine in for a replacement TPS, as this was a reported cause for the problem, but I eventually sorted it myself - found a guide on adjusting the 'air sync' screws... that seemed to remedy it. This problem happened with both standard parts and air filter/end can.

The first gear it stupidly long... indicated 107mph (iirc... might be 102), so I changed my front sprocket to -1 tooth - this totally transformed the bike, made it so easier to ride around town, as I didn't have to use the clutch as much.

Economy.... not great, but I understand that's a bit of a Yamaha trait, average before reserve was 100-110 miles, reserve was good for 19.5 miles... before I was pushing.

Massive power! The thing was stupidly fast, and that's only with about half throttle.... I personally rarely hit the stopper on the right hand, so the YCCT never opened everything up.

I'll add more if I think of them, or fire some questions, and I'll try to ask...

999S will hold its value stupidly well, they haven't really dropped in price in the last 3-4 years (I know I've been waiting for them to drop to around 4K but it isn't happening). They were 5K+ in 2007 and they are 5K+ now.

That's a good price for a 999s with that low mileage and 1 owner, even non S model 10K+ mile 2003 999 are going for £4.5K as a minimum.

thanks scort for the advice ive probably decided against the r1 as dont really like it in red and white. sad i know. prefer them in blue and as good as they are prefer the busa.

dureth so you think 6299 is the right price of the 999s then? do you think ill lose much in a years use with a couple of thou extra on it?

It's definitely not a bad price for a low mileage 1 owner 999s with full history. I would say in a year or two with a couple of extra thousand on it you'd be looking at £5500 minimum resale but you probably would be able to get what you paid for it if you keep it nice.

Excellant that's probably helped me decide then if I enjoy the test ride as only really planning on keeping it for a year or 2 tops then selling on and getting a new bike again. Cheers. Do you know much about the reliability of them??

No worries - though I love the R1 in red and white :p ;) :D Actually considering one as my next bike, however! A mate has just bought a 999S and I've kind of fallen in love with it... that or the cheaper 749 :D

Best of luck with your purchase though!

Oh, a p.s. to my post - my mate told me that if you're going the route of the 749/999, then go for a post 2005 model - with the red frame; supposed to have had an electrical system revision that makes the that little more reliable. Though, I'm not sure of the details.

cheers scort. wasnt really looking for a 999s but just saw it at the dealership were i buy all my bikes from and fancied it. its on 03 model so possibly may have the electrical problem. ill look into the problem and do a bit of research, than

lol i know what you mean mate thats one of the main factors. the bike sounded amazing when it started and watching peoples faces as i rode towards them was fun. peoples heads were turning as you approached due to the noise
