This friend of mine used to insist on reinstalling when his temp folders and IE cache filled up, it just always struck me as wasted effort.

I don't see it as a wasted effort at all, not had a problem since doing this since 2004. So sorry your wrong.

It's not a wrong or right type of situation, he hasn't suggested you'll get problems he's saying he doesn't see the necessity of reinstalling windows on a monthly basis, especially as it strongly suggests a very limited capacity for maintaining a PC.

There's nothing wrong with re-installing Windows every so often as it really is the quickest way of freshening everything up especially when you have an SSD but the way you've presented it makes it seem like you're not really sure what you're doing.

Indeed. I haven't formatted in like 6 months or so and before then it was whenever I got rid of my old PC. It's quite unnecessary to format that often. What you want to do is your business after all

I had to double take spoffle - I thought you hadn't done the bit you did in bold and underline and I was about to quote and do something similar

Have you tried doing a basic install, patching it up, installing your base apps and then taking an image? There's some really good imaging software out there that is free to use. And its a great way to lessen the time and effort required to get your install back to a fresh state.

It takes 10 minutes to reinstall windows. The drivers dont take long and i dont get any programmes, they are all on another drive.

I know the problem has been solved but i remember seeing something like that years ago on certain games when my mouse polling rate was at 1000Hz.Whilst looking at my g15 keyboard display with core temp active any movement of the mouse seemed to produce rather large percentage increase in one of the cores in (50-60% ).When dropping down to 500Hz the % would be much less (10-20%).Maybe on games which require some cpu grunt and fill up all your cores the movement of the mouse causes fluctuations in available cpu time that impacts gpu performance causing a mild stutter due to rapidly varying frame times?of course that could be all complete ******** so feel free to ignore

Thinking it about it reinstalling windows and as a result reinstalling your mouse driver possiblt defaulted it back to 500Hz thus curing your problem?? meh just a thought

There are ways to tell someone that they're wrong, and that wasn't one of them.

This isn't strictly true, you will still have to reinstall some applications that either need to be on the C drive, or rely on registry entries.

If its only 10 minutes to install Windows and drivers, then it must only be 2-3 minutes tops to do the all the Windows updates

I've had this issue with mouse stutter for as long as I can remember playing fps games, specifically the stutter you get when you strafe around an object using the mouse to keep your view locked on the target. It's not always noticeable and not as bad as what the OP posted, but depending on the game and frame rate, it's pretty common in all the fps games I've played. Sometimes enabling vsync reduces the stutter effect. It's hardly noticeable when just looking around with the mouse, but circle strafing seems to just amplify the effect.

I'm now pretty certain though that it is just my mouse movements not being completely smooth and not a graphics/driver issue. Whether this is a result of jittery hand movements or poor surface tracking, I'm not sure, but probably a combination of both as I've had the same problem on different mice and surfaces, some being better than others. Also, when doing the same movement using a gamepad, it is completely smooth, which again points to the mouse being the culprit.

Actually I do no windows updates, its fully activated already with sp1, and nothing other than drivers gets installed on my c drive. I keep my windows on a small 60gb ssd, which takes 10 minutes and its always onto the desktop complete.

Do you do a proper format then install windows from a bootable dvd / usb drive?

Surely you need to re-install certain programs to get them to function correctly.

I do a proper format yes, you dont have to install any programmes, not if they are all installed on other drives. They just work.

Some applications will happily run standalone. Steam, EvE online, EQ2, and several other games I've played will do this. However not every application behaves this way, many require registry hooks in order to run. You just don't use any of them.
