Sat here having a bowl of noodles and it struck me that I find chopsticks natural to use now. I don't have to think about it anymore. So who else can use them well and who has tried and given up?

Used them in the Chinese tonight :) great fun, although I still can't quite get the grip on consuming rice ...

Much funnier when you critical fumble a piece of schezuan chicken and throw it across the room tho :D

Even the Chinese use spoons for their rice. I like using chopsticks for noodles and stir frys though.

Not true. Lift the bowl to your mouth and scoop the rice in with the chopsticks :)

If I eat Chinese food - I only eat with chopsticks - it should not be eaten any other way...adds to the authenticity and experience.....they are quite easy to master once someone has shown you the "how to".:)

Mind you when I eat Indian food - I eat only with my hands and chapatis - I do tend to get carried away with experiencing "authenticity" :D Mental is what it is!

Now, since you're in bristol Zefan, have you been to Mayflower in the centre near the bus station?

Nope. My girlfriend lives across the hall in this flat so I don't leave the flat often :o

I think I know where you mean though.

I've always been all thumbs with chopsticks until the last time I went to Hana Hana's in Newcastle with friends sometime early in November. We're off there again on Tuesday and I just hope I can use them still.

i am absolutely useless with them, but each time im in a chinese restaurant i give it a go. i get on ok to start with, then it all goes **** up and i end up spooning the food out of the bowl :/

TBH the last few times I've cooked and eaten with Chinese friends they've eaten off plates and used a spoon rather than a fork to eat their rice. The only rule seemed to be that the thumb had to be higher than the plate rim for some reason, I'll ask next time.

Chopsticks are easy to use, why? Probably because I've used them since I was born. Doesn't give much away does it...

The only reason you don't use a chopstick to eat off a plate simply because it's more than often used with a bowl to shovel rice into your mouth. :) There's all sorts of way to hold a chopstick, so long as you can pick the food up, it's fine.

I couldnt use them before i went to asia...Now I can...

Not keen on chinese chopsticks though...not precise enough...Korean chopsticks > * with japanese a close second.
