In the space of 7 months, Christian Bale went from this:

To this:

Thats from 120lbs to 220lbs or so, then cutting down some of the fat and getting to around 205lbs for Batman Begins, all in around 7 months time, while filming and learning martial arts for the film. Very impressive stuff.

yes. He is one of the best and im sure the most dedicated actor i've ever seen. I've not seen him in a bad role yet. It takes some serious commitment to loose weight to that extent and basically double your weight in the space of a year.

I've got the machinist on dvd. very weird film...anyway, there's quite an in depth feature on the making of the film. They said it was extremely hot and humid where the film was filmed, and many of the crew and cast were having problems dealing with the heat and coming down with illness. All except Bale, who was so thin the heat didnt affect him. crazy stuff.

The most impressive thing for me isn't how he gained so much, it's how he was dedicated enough to get down to that weight for The Machinist in the first place!! I've seen that film and he's painfully thin!

Bet he enjoyed himself putting all the weight back on :)

Funnily enough, he said losing the weight made him feel calm and helped with depression he was suffering from, while putting on the weight was horrific.

To get to 120lbs, he ate an apple, a can of tuna and smoked a ciggarette a day. He said on the extra's of batman begins that he just stuffed his face and lifted heavy weights to get bigger, then he cut some fat. He obviously has great determination, but he said consuming so much food made him feel ill. He was so weak after the machinist he couldn't do one press up.

Dedication. He's a very versatile character actor. Reminds me a lot of Ed Norton. I'm not sure that he's 220lbs though. He's around 6ft tall. I'd say he was more around the 190-195lb mark.

He bulked to 220lbs, then cut to around 205lbs.

That's an incredible transformation. I wonder if he used anything to help him regain that size.
If mean gear then I doubt it, supplements most certainly.

Perfectly possible to gain that much weight if you start off 100lbs below your ideal weight. Especially when you consider he would have had some of the finest personal trainers and nutrition experts helping him and working out his diet and routine, etc :)

Great actor dont think i have seen him in a bad film, somebody compared him to ed norton above, two of this generations best actors imo.

Can it be 'bad' fopr you get that low and gain again? its quite a short time to do it in really.

If what's been said is true he apparently lived off an apple, a can of tuna and a cig a day! I'd say that's pretty damn bad for you, as his physique shows. A bit longer on that diet and he'd be dead.

While he was losing weight for The Machinist he was regularly visiting a doctor so he could keep tabs on him. He got really thin and the doctor told him to stop or he could permenatly damage himself. He then carried on losing the weight.

Christian Bale is probably my favourite actor, hes superb. He just seems to live for the roles he's in. I think the only other 2 actors I can say put that much commitment into their roles are Ed Norton and Brad Pitt

But yeah he's fantastic and like mentioned in other posts, I havent seen one bad performance from him

i just worked out im 140lbs and yet i look skinnier than he does in his top photo up there ^^ :(

A lot of that has to do with genetics though I'd imagine, Christian Bale is a fairly big guy naturally, if it is any consolation you are probably quite a bit healthier than he was in the top picture. :)

As for people saying that you've never seen Christian Bale in a bad role, I take it you have never seen the remake of Shaft. :D It isn't the worst film ever but nor is it any good really.

Just no! the kung-fu style sword fights in troy let him down big time, he is too much of a pretty boy, but he is getting better, he is very good in Babel.

He still puts a hell of a lot into his roles, I actually loved Troy, top film
