Christmas markets

I can vouch for the Birmingham Market, its amazing. Great food and beer for sale all around.

Last went in 2009, hoping to make another visit this year!

I can only really speak of the Manchester one but it's pretty good and grows each year. Covers about 4 separate areas this year.

My girlfriend just came back from her Hen Do in Leeds and said they had quite a good one.

Depending on your money situation if you've got a few days how about a break away into Europe? My mum and sister have started traveling to various markets. They're off to Zurich this year and have been to a few German cities as well as Bruges in the last few years.

Doesn't the Manchester market have a German/Baverian Christmas theme each year?

There's actually a lot more choice than just German 'offerings'.

European and local producers offer everything from fine amber jewellery, handcrafted leather bags, and top quality bonsai trees, to Dutch cheeses, French breads, and Spanish chorizo. Perfect for alternative gift ideas, enjoy the banter and advice of stallholders from all over the continent.

The array of food and drink on offer is mind-boggling, with mouth-watering delicacies from all over Europe. Try sweet and savoury treats from Dutch mini pancakes and Hungarian goulash to Spanish paella and French profiteroles. Relax with a hot chocolate, warming Gluhwein, German or Spanish beer or French wine. Soak up the atmosphere of a truly international event with a uniquely Mancunian flavour.

I'm going to sample the delights a week on Saturday. Hopefully there's a bit of snow between now and then to add to the atmosphere! :)

I have no idea if it's true but BBC breakfast told me this morning that Birmingham is the biggest Christmas market outside of Germany. But I haven't verified that :p

Wheeey a Bury lad

The York one is horrible, aren't they all?

It's quite fun and varied. It has stands selling festive stuff (or tat), LOADS and loads of food stalls, from doughnuts, burgers, paella, fish & chips, sausages to noodles and stuff.

It takes over the whole city centre! (it stretches about a mile long from end to end.)

Birmingham is good, and even bigger this year extending right down New Street. I'll no doubt be going one evening for a beer, a sausage, garlic bread and some candied nuts soon :D

I was in town briefly on Saturday evening, and it was absolutely crazy how many people were there, you literally had to shuffle down the road at a snail pace!
