anyone else here suffer from anxiety ?,and has anyone managed to overcome it ? if so how :)

I've suffered for the last ten years :( started with a panic attack every few weeks but very manageable to where i am now 10 years later.i have been on many meds some worked some didn't the last of which was mirtazapine at the highest dose for 3.5 years  it got to the point where it wasn't as effective so the dr told me to switch meds but did not want to taper me off and on so took me off over 2 weeks which made me ill with withdrawal symptoms  been off work on and off over last 2 months (4 days at work) on and off diazepam.im now on new meds which are making me feel terrible.ive had cbt which didn't help and now i just need to find something that will work :)

have you not tried things like counseling etc.. first or did the GP just go straight to using drugs to 'solve' the issue?

anyway I think this counts as a medical thread so I'm not sure how long it will last here

I did about 10 years a go. I managed to get a dozen CBT sessions through work and BUPA, we worked though a mindfulness work book together and the rest is history. It is something I live with daily but now I live with it not against it or fight it and am happy just to tell people that I need ten minutes.

I think the worst thing is to bottle it up, try and deal with it yourself and not be able to express to people how you are feeling.

Never been on any medication.

20 years, I was in school when it started.
Currently on 200mg sertraline and 50mg trazodone (to help me sleep).

Seems to keep it under control, still have bad days. Counseling and CBT didn't help, in fact counseling used to make it worse. Talking with my family and spending time with them when i'm down seems to help the most.

Funny enough I have just been diagnosed with Anxiety a few weeks ago.

Just cracked one day and knew I couldn't take it any more, to be honest just talking to people has helped me massively just in the short space of time. I am going to try and work through it by relaxing more, talking more & excercising more.

The problem and trigger with me is the last 6 years I have worked for a Boss who was relentless with everything, not giving me a moments peace, everything had problems and even after work I just did not have any downtime as I would be worrying about what would be happening next. All I started to think was what was going to happen next and just dreaded it.

Started a new job in May, however still trying to get out of the old bosses mindset. But the new company an guys who run it are the total opposite...never a problem always a solution is their moto!

Also last 2 years of my life has been a blur...married, child, moved house, lost job, new job, grandad died, dad had to have a liver transplant.

I am one person to just bottle everything up, I am leaning that a problem or feeling shared is definitely halved! I know there is a long way to go but I am feeling so much better and drinking much less!

Have you worked out what your triggers about feeling anxious are?

Also I think this thread should be kept open, it isn't a medical thread as such and would be a great help for those who suffer to know they are not alone.

If this was closed it wouldn't help matters.

thanks for the responses guys, both cbt and counselling and neither worked and for the poster who posted about citralapram yeah that was the first drug i was on and its the mildest they prescribe for anxciety I'm way beyond those :( anyone had hypnotherapy ? as i feel that is the last thing left to try ?

I've had hypnotherapy (for something else) and it does work, you have to want it to, but it does.

However, seriously get that book I recommended it. It's AMAZING how much of a difference it makes. Like, it changed me over night. It's a small book too, won't take long to read.

If you cant afford it give me your address ill buy you a copy.

ginG just read your thread sorry :) i don't have any triggers as such apart from mild social anxiety and health anxiety, my biggest problem is the panic disorder thats the one causing the most problems I'm at a stage now where i have anxiety/panic attacks lasting 2-3 hours per day which leaves me exhausted afterwards  hopefully these new meds will help once i get to the dose needed and they are in my system fully.

I take Amisulpride and Paroxetine, I had a huge mental breakdown last year due to losing track of when I was taking the medication and slowly getting out of control.

After that "episode" I find I am much improved.

Diagnosed with Panic Disorder in 2001, have been on Mirtazapine and propanalol since probably around a year later. Have had CBT,diet changes etc but the best thing that helped me was talking to others with anxiety. I started chatting with an Anxiety support group site then got involved with the running of it. I consider myself mostly symptom free nowadays (still have the odd moment here and there).

Honestly, get on a chat site and just talk with people who truly know how you feel. Docs, people can give you advice till the cows come home but unless you have experienced it, they just can't tell you properly.

(feel free to email me for the site if you like but I would rather not post here in case some gits try to give them grief)

It wasnt citalopram. It was Escitalopram. Mine is more for anxiety than just depression!
