Chronicles of Riddick:Assault on Dark Athena (or DRM - when will they learn?)

DOH, thanks for the headsup, I quite enjoyed the first game, but I won't touch a game with activation limits or intrusive DRM.

3 installs, i can live with that why would you need to install it more than 3 times?

I think its more of the principle of it. You are buying a game, you arent renting it. Image how many times you are going to change your OP over the next few years or need a reinstall if you have a problem.

Imagine if you installed XP with the game. Then you heard some good things about the latest patch for vista and think, hey Ill give that a try. Then windows 7 comes out and you get that. Thats all your installs done!

Then what if W7 isnt that good and you decide you want to go back to vista, shame you cant play your game you "purchased a licence for"

So you pay £25-£35 for a game that you can only install 3 times.

I think the gaming industry needs to think hard about DRM. Its only hurting themselves.

DRM does not protect games from being pirated. I think DRM only encourages it. I personally was looking forward to this game but with Windows 7 just around the corner I can see myself changing OS more than 3 times over the next few years.

Unfortunately this will only push people towards piracy.

Now if the multiplayer side was any good they wouldnt even need the DRM. As people would buy it for that alone.

Big fat FAIL!

Exactly. The way I see it, a good game is worth the £30-£40. Weeks maybe months of entertainment and one night out costs more than that. However I wont pay that to rent a game which is what a 3 install limit is.

That is absolutely retarded

Buy the game install it, play it, don't quite finish it.

Computer issues, format PC reinstall windows, reinstall game.

New Windows comes out, your a new adopter and are keen to try Windows 7.

Format PC, reinstall windows, reinstall game.

Windows 7 has issues at launch and requires a format.

Format PC, reinstall windows, reinsta.... I can't reinstall game.

That has actually been a real life problem with me and one or two games from the move from XP to Vista. But I've never had the "I can't reinstall a game" issue.

I don't see why DRM licencers take a leaf from companies like eLicencing - they do work for small companies and when you install it your copy of the game gets regestered on their servers. You cannot install it again until you either a) uninstall the game or b) contact eLicencing with your code for them to unregister it.

It's proved quite a good way of doing things

well, i'd take a drive image/ghost backup of my machine if there was a chance i'd need to revert to a previous OS etc and probably be more miffed that i'd spent a whole bunch of money on opertaing system's that i no longer use. even if you have to reinstall the one you already use, then an image would not only solve the 3 install rule but also save a bunch of time in having to setup your machine as it was.

as for playing the game again in 10 years, id probably buy it again if it was that good for a couple of quid from steam or sold-out software, if it was that good then i'd be prepared to pay a little for it again

I find myself in that situation a lot for some strange reason. :D

So I totally agree, it's a ridiculous thing to implement on a game release. Honestly, did no one at the games company responsible for this stick their hand up and say "Errr......wait a minute, this ain't exactly a cracking idea"?. :p

As many have said, there are obviously plenty of ways around it ( none of them legal as we all know ) but why on earth should we have to go down that route if we want to play the game/install it more than 3 times?.

Ridiculous indeed. Was really looking forward to playing the game too, I was late to catch on to Riddick for the PC and only played the first one all the way through last year and had high hopes for this but now I'm not so sure I will bother with it.

/waits for steam release

A game being released on Steam doesn't necessarily mean the publishers will adopt the SteamWorks way of dealing with DRM.

I bough FarCry2 on Steam, but I enjoy mucking around with OS's. A few installs of Win7 later, I couldn't play the game due to a lack of activations, and had to ring Ubisoft to get my limit reset.

Now that's verging on 'okay' in my head - but if a developer isn't going to allow a revocation tool, then they're basically just renting the game rather than selling it. There's no way I'll ever be able to complete a game more than once with only 3 installs allowed, and I won't pay for a game that I'm not going to be able to play over and over.

Come on peeps, we need a failboat here!! Faiiiiiiiiiiiilbooooooooat!!

What a bunch of absolute muppets, draconian DRM only hurts sales. Even a dumbass like me can see that!! :D

Fail.

A game that you've paid a lot of money for you can only install 3 times.
Pathetic.

I hope the sales are pathetic, and nobody buys this game, I hope it's hacked.
Might teach these people a lesson.

I'm sure that this will be reversed or some kind of revoke tool will be implemented. It's already getting 1 starred on amazon, so i'm sure they'll get the message.
