Chronicles of Riddick:Assault on Dark Athena (or DRM - when will they learn?)

EPIC FAIL
What happens in 5 years time when they decided to turn off the DRM server and I want to play the game
As everyone as already stated, limited install/activation DRM is utter utter fail and I refuse to touch a game with it no matter how good that game may be.
When will they learn that the pirates dont give a crap about DRM that the publishers obviously spend millions on to licence because it will be cracked with in 10 seconds of the damn games release while the legitimate customers are getting screwed left and right.

/RANT OVER

If you go out and purchase a game it should be yours forever, you should be able to install it and play it as many times as you want.

No wonder why so many people download games when they're pull stunts like this.

they are only protecting the initial sales, later they will open it up

No offence m8 but that philosophy just doesn't make sense.

you can phone up thier helpline in the meantime.

Again, no offence intended but when I shell out £xx.xx for a PC game, it should be mine to do with as I like as far as installing and running it goes.

The last couple of games I have purchased for the PC don't require me to call any "helpline" if I feel the need to install it more than 3 times, so why should this one do so?.

Initially you are limited to installing it 3 times on different computers, if your using the same install os and hardware you can sit and install/deinstall as many times as you like.

like ive said they are doing this to protect the initial sales.

"We implement this protection in an effort to avoid early piracy," explained Atari. "The [initial] activation code lets you install the game on up to 3 machines, with an unlimited number of installs on each assuming that you don't change any major hardware in your PC or re-install your operating system."

"customers can acquire more activations, assuming "it's a legitimate request," by calling the Atari hotline."

Get used to it as future PC games are likely to have more DRM.

I personally hate it as its the exact same DRM scheme Atari used for Alone In The Dark5 (which Atari refuse to develop a patch for to bring it up to the same gameplay improvement tweaks only the PS3 version got) but if its this or no PC game then its a no-brainer. The actual game is a wait and see anyway as most of it is just a Riddick HD remastered rehash very little new content and its not like Riddick did not already have very decent enhanced gfx on the PC is it.

I think most PC gamers are still deluded about just how bad PC piracy is and how little support the PC platform has in the mainstream publishers right now. Even though the PC has around 130-140M machines worldwide with decent gfx cards (more than X360+PS3+Wii combined) it still does not get much support because piracy is so ramptant and few PC games sell into 6 figures let alone 7. We are lucky to even get 3rd rate ports and you can forget having many PC games worth buying from now until late autumn as they are none scheduled right now!!

with an unlimited number of installs on each assuming that you don't change any major hardware in your PC or re-install your operating system."

If you dont change hardware or reinstall. Thats all pc gamers do lol Thats why we have pcs so we can take them apart and put new bits in. ;)

Its not going to protect early piracy, its going to stop early sales.

"We implement this protection in an effort to avoid early piracy,"
HAHAHAHHAHAHAH
Im sorry but that line right there is just...oh I dont have the words honestly.
The game will be cracked and torrented within 5 seconds of release how exacaly are they preventing early piracy
All DRM is doing is pushing more and more legitimate customers away from there product and towards the torrent sites.
I just cant understand how the people running these publishing companies cannot see the blindingly obvious and just HOW out of touch they realy are with there market right now.

I hope the sales are pathetic, and nobody buys this game, I hope it's hacked.
Might teach these people a lesson.

The problem is it won't stop the DRM it will just stop companies taking a risk with unusual games that bring new things to the genre :(

No way to win here for us, if you buy it you're supporting the game and the drm, if you don't then companies will just stop making games like it :(

It isn't only 3 installs. :)

· There are 3 tokens in order to install the game on 3 different PCs.
· If you want to deinstall the game from one of these PCs and install it later again you do not need any further token - which means unlimited installations on one PC.
· In case you have to reinstall the system of the "Riddick PC” more than three times and you have used up the tokens you get another installation token via the hotline - for free.

As always the usual 'panic' over a protection system to stop pirates ...

for me, if the games good i'll buy it .. you will always be able to re-install as many times as you want.

I am a huge fan of the riddick films and I loved the last game.

However I'm sick of games using DRM like this, and yes while in the past I have got games with DRM with activation limits, no more. EA learned their lesson so people like these have too.
