Cigar Aficionados

asides from the obvious, the nicotine high is so so much more mellow with cigars. cigarettes are a lot more violent, hard to describe really.

anyone have any recommendations for light cuban cigars, petit coronas in particular?

For petite coronas you've got to at least try the Montecristo No.4 as its not the best selling Cuban cigar for nothing. Another to try would be the the Por Larranga but they are sold in limited quantities so might be hard to get depending on where you buy from.

Got the humidor through today, very impressed.

Bumping this old thread as I have some questions that can hopefully be answered.
For cigars that come in tubes, is it best to leave them in the tube when putting them in the humidor, or to take them out of the tube first?
Secondly, wheres the best place to buy a humidor. I have one but it cant fit all my cigars in there.
I've just purchased a good stock from New Delhi airport duty free; ridiculously cheap there.

Anywhere in the UK is going to have extortionate prices for humidors. Bear pointed me to www.cubancrafters.com a few years ago where he got his and I got mine. Even with shipping, you'll still get the humidor for well under half the price of anything of equivalent size and quality in the UK. This seems to be a good deal right now:

For Tubos cigars, I always remove them from the tube. They're in the sealed tube to somewhat preserve the quality, but they'll do much better in a well kept humidor.

Funny this thread should come up. I haven't touched a cigar in years and just happened to buy one the other day, a Montecristo Petit Edmundo. I still have half of the Esplendidos I posted earlier in this thread. They're coming up to 10 years old now so should be good smokers. I think I'll keep them for the summer evenings though.

I went to Bar and Books whilst in Prague and it was great, they have cigar menus as well as spirits etc so you can chill out with a quality cigar paired with a decent Cognac or Whisky and read if you like.

Picked up 50 Cohiba Siglo IV's and 50 Montecristo Joyitas on my way back from the middle east, still got loads of aged ones that need smoking, damn weather stops play in this country :(

What are other peoples humidors like for holding the humidity? I bought a humidor and keep cigars in it,but the cigars went soft-so I gave up.

Too much solution in there? Those beads Tomsk linked to might help you out.

Mine is pretty good. I neglected it for a while and the humidity dropped to just under 60% leaving the cigars a bit hard but it's back on for now sitting at about 68%.

Stick some silica gel packets in there to bring the humidity down. Once it's back to normal levels, carefully monitor the humidity. If your humidor is any good it shouldn't take much effort at all to keep a good level.

As above, you can drop the humidity back down and that should do the trick. I also bought a digital hygrometer for about £10 as I never trust the needle gauges since I had one break on me and my cigars dried out. The current one I have is a cheapy chinese thing, its accurate and has worked 24/7 for 2 years now.

Bump!

I've smoked a few cigars, and do enjoy them. I'd like to get a bit more knowledgeable about them though, and that means I need to smoke more! There are two shops near to me that have big walk in humidors and sell a wide range of cigars (for a wide range of prices) so I'll buy them from there (just as I need - can't afford a humidor atm). However, can anyone suggest what I should buy to give me a decent introduction?

In the past I've had the Romeo Julietas, couple of different Partagas and a Cohiba or four. No doubt a couple of others as well.

So yea, what can you suggest that I get trying?
