CIMA...... Just got started

Don't worry, you're not alone in believing that your life experience is more eclectic than it really is :).

As much as I could agree with you given that I am an accountant, one thing I have learned in life is that there is no such thing as normal, regardless of how much somebody professes that they are.

Thought I would give this a bump in light of the next lot of results being released on the 10th July (next Thursday ).

I passed E1 & F1 last November scoring 72% & 76% in each, far exceeding my expectations of scraping passes :) This sent me guns blazing in to F2 & P1 and it wasn't long before I began to significantly spin my wheels with the F2 syllabus finding the combination of so much similarity between the array of group treatments to be a struggle which then hindered my confidence elsewhere in the syllabus. P1 was not particularly difficult to grasp and a lot of E1/P1 and the certificate level overlapped.

I felt like I'd done enough to pass back in May and felt that the papers were of moderate difficulty but you know how it is when results day edges closer and closer the seed of doubt emerges!

Who else is waiting for results next week? Good luck to all!

Perhaps talking to myself again...:p

I passed P2 with a comfortable margin in the May 14 sitting, and scraped through F2 (which as I mentioned I found quite difficult due to the sheer syllabus size and variations) with no room to spare.

With the impending 2015 syllabus structure change there was a little more pressure on November sitting. I felt quite prepared but for the first time ever my time management fell apart in E2, I ended up rushing when I realised I was way behind schedule and generally found the paper a little awkward.

This shook me up for P2 which I and many others found very unclear in some question requirements.

I thought that it would be boarder line if I managed to pass and even this morning was almost certain I had failed and would have to finish the Management tier on the new syllabus with the CBA's and mini case study, having to recall my F2 knowledge too!

CIMA's website completely fell apart this morning and I still haven't received my e-mail yet....nevertheless I managed to login on my phone to see I have passed both so will be moving on to Strategic level in 2015 :)

How did everyone else do?

No. You're not talking to yourself.

Strange that I've come across this thread only now. I've been working in the IT sector since leaving college (at 19. Now 30!). About a year and a half ago I joined a firm as a Finance Systems Analyst. Been a great position for the most part. Have learned a lot during this time and am really enjoying working in/around finance... So much so that I recently secured another role (which I start next) as a Finance Systems Analyst lol.

As part of the package the new recruiter has agreed fund my AAT qualification and subsequent CIMA or ACCA qualification!

Didnt for one second ever see myself becoming a qualified account. Now I've spotted this thread I'll be keeping a close eye on it!

If you'll excuse me. I'm going to read this thread from start to current.

You will find AAT ridiculously easy (at least you should do). Don't expect that will carry on when you do the proper qualifications!!! :D

Looking forward to it. Can be rather annoying writing/developing financial reports with very little financial experience!

Congratulations on the new role and securing a qualification too!

As mentioned you might find AAT too basic. You may (or may not on the new CIMA syllabus) have some exemptions if you are AAT qualilfied but ultimately will still have quite a lot of work to do getting up to speed with the way each qualification is examined and the individual syllabuses.

It might be worth considering, for benefit in the long run, starting with something like the CIMA Certificate level. I had no financial/business background and it took me around 6 months to do the 5 Computer Based Assesments and it gave me great grounding for the professional qualification.

For example the Business Maths module refreshed Algebra for me which helped massively in P2 for Linear Programming when quite a few from other backgrounds struggled with both the concept of solving quadratic equations and then also Linear Programming itself.

Quite a few graduates from Universities with business & accountancy qualifications have been just as confused and struggled just as much (and been just as lost) on modules as those like me with no background.

Just my 2p.

Trust me I need that basic understanding of accounting... Both the terms used and concepts. Just wish my currently employer lived up to their promise and provided me the the knowledge to do an even better job. Not too fussed now as I'm going somewhere better.

Just cant wait to get started.

Can you not start CIMA from scratch?

I did AAT and it gave me exemptions from the first 3 ACCA exams. I wish I'd have been able to just go straight into ACCA as AAT was pretty similar to A Level accounting.

I'm a fellow Finance Systems Analyst, who do you work for? :)

Ahh just some regional law firm :)

What system you using? Elite, Aderant, Sage....

We use Aderant Expert, I assume you also use it being a law firm?

I'm at an Insolvency practice so it's not quite perfect for our needs but it suits more than most we considered.

I see. How long have you been in this sort of position? Your background Finance or IT?

Always been into computers (hence why I'm on a computer based forum), however my career has been solely finance based starting off as an Accounts Assistant before moving into a slightly more systems based role.

I'm now at the point where I'm about to finish my ACCA, and trying to decide what I want to do. I'm erring towards more Commercial structured role and concerned about pigeon holing myself at the moment into a fairly niche position.

Nice. I'm coming from the other end. Been a developer and database admin / report writer from day one. Only got into finance when I joined my current employer.

Exciting times ahead.

E1, P1 and F1 results today. All marks in the high 70's low 80's. Surprised as I felt like I'd absolutely tanked the P1 paper.

Onwards to P2 in February under the new syllabus!

That's fairly normal, it's either not updated until well after you'd expect or it falls over repeatedly. Congratulations on passing though.

Can you not start CIMA from scratch?

Is that a general question about whether you can or specifically for DAIR's role and situation? If the former then you absolutely can do it from scratch and the certificate level gives you the grounding to move onto the next level(s).
