ok so i`m messsing around with a Cisco 2621 and ahve it connected to the switch of my Netgear DG834.........FE 0/1 configured as 192.168.0.20 no dhcp from the netgear etc, other nodes static IPs also......now when I boot Cisco up initially everything is fine adn I can ping the Netgear ok (192.168.0.1), then after about 5 mins it refuses to ping only 192.168.0.1, it WILL ping other nodes and other nodes will still ping it, I`ve looked at the interface and its showing no errors or anything suspicious, I`ve also configured the other Ethernet interface in the same way and it does exactly the same, when I hard set the speed or duplex it works ok again for 5 mins or so then loses it again.........I also added a static ARP mapping to no avail..beginning to think that the Netgear and Cisco simply dont like each other, I also configured a loopback on the Cisco and it pings fine all the time as do pings to other nodes on the 192.168.0.0 network.......ultimately I plan on getting an ADSL module for the Cisco so it wont matter...unless of course there is an issue with the Cisco itself though it doesnt seem point to that..........

If you are pinging the netgear switch from a host on the 192.168.0.x range, then the router isnt even getting involved in the communication, so the issue would almost certainly lie between the host and switch.

NVM, misread slightly. When you lose ICMP access from the Cisco router itself, can other hosts plugged into the switch ping the switch?

The Netgear switch ports are auto-negotiate so you must have the Cisco port speed and duplex configured for auto.

Could be another machine with the same address as the router. Are you running any software on a machine that does ARP spoofing?

Do you get the same problem if you disconnect everything except router to Netgear?

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry I was slow but I fell asleep :o

Tui: I have tried setting the interface speed to auto,I`ll also disconnect all when I get back in from work to try it, oh and I have no s/ware on any systems spoofing addresses :)

Rich:yes other hosts still ping the switch when the router loses it , AND the Cisco can still ping the OTHER hosts
