sdm leftovers i think, i remember formatting flash and then re-installing sdm/sdm express, i didn't think the OS would be in the flash memory.

The OS and all the system files are held in flash, if you formatted flash there should be nothing left in flash.
You need to perform the steps people have mentioned above, by giving the router ip details whilst in rommon, then doing s tftpdnld to receive the image from the tftp server you already have setup.
I wouldn't worry about any sdm files or the html stuff, all you need is the IOS image in there..

well it just keeps giving me illegal ip address, think im gonna have to admit defeat on this one and shelve it. :( i hate networking. :p

it's pretty difficult to set it up wrong, it also sounds like it can't find the machine at all, have you disabled your firewall? You could try a ping from the other end too.

Failing that you can transfer the IOS by serial (you'll want to change the serial port to 115kbps first) but it'll take bloody ages

the command you'll need is

xmodem -cf fileimagename

though you'll need to then send the file from your telnet client (transfer/send file in hyperterm)

windows firewall is disabled yes but like i said when i run sygate security scan quite a few ports are still being blocked so im presuming the hardware firewall is still operational in some way.

i still keep getting getting timeouts gona keep trying different things....

i'm sending via Xmodem now, going very slowly. ;)

it didn't seem to like me increasing baud rate so stuck at 9000ish still, 3 and half hours to go wish me luck- at least i can play wow whilst it sends. :p

thanks for all your help.

I had to do this once on a 2600, yes, it did take an hour and a bit, but at least it got the job done. i'd say format the flash, and then trickle it over the console cable.

how do i format the flash? i fancy a fresh start...

im pretty sure that once the IOS is installed the manuals have sufficient instructions for setting up the router with SDM so i should be ok then (touch wood).

I wouldn't to be honest, just let it transfer, theres no IOS on there so there should be loads of room.

You will have lost the config anyway...

ok it's done and copied over ok, it is still registering as old version 'bootstrap' (is that a problem?) but the newer IOS image runs fine although once again i am totally stuck. :(

Im pretty sure the ROMMON commands are all case sensitive and MUST be capitalised.

There will be a "boot" command or a "boot system" command from Rommon, make sure its set to load the IOS you have.
The commands "SET" and "help" should help you find out what its set to....which will likely be the older image.

Edit: Misunderstood. The bootstrap will always show an old version, as long as when you type "show ver" you get something like this:
"System image file is "flash:c1700-advsecurityk9-mz.123-19.bin" obviously with the image you used, you will be fine.

do any of you live in the Sheffield area?

i'm now getting Router> prompt but i'll be damned if i know what i'm doing, it isn't even connecting anymore now i'm having to run straight from my modem.

I can't install SDM because there's no IP to connect to it.

well, that means it's all up and working,

router>en
router#conf t
router (conf) -enter config commands here-

you'll have lost your config, i suspect you'll have to set an ip manually to use SDM

in config..

int fa0/1
ip addr 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

should do the trick

that was an example, that'd work for a 1700 or 2600 but i've no idea what interfaces are on an 851, is it 10mbit or 100? how many? look it up online

is it possible to RMA it to Cisco to be restored do you know? even if for a fee I've had enough and admit defeat been up since 7 ffs. :(

thanks for all your help though. :)
