CIT power supply exploded

to be fair, unless you hang around on dedicated hardware forums, it's not the sort of thing you just know when building a PC. i know the first time i put a pc together, i'd never been on an a forum. i remember buying some horrible beige case with included PSU. it did me alright actually. :p

it's only when i encountered a few unrelated problems with the build that i stumbled across forums like this one. and then of course you soon learn how important a decent PSU is.

I hear you, but its arguably the most crucial part of a computer. Without a power supply, no other component can function. If you knew that you could spend £50 to £100 on a 500W PSU if you wanted to, you would question why there is a 500W included with a case for £30  From that you could deduce that there is going to be a difference in quality and reliability, and I think I would spend £30 or £40 to ensure that my £500 PC doesn't explode :p

You are after all, essentially trusting it to provide delicate hardware with the exact voltage etc that they require.

I say this now, having been moving in these circles for years as you say. I'm not sure if I would have taken the same view previously... But I think I probably would have paid more for a half decent PSU rather than the included one if I knew that:

- It came included with a case for £30
- I could pay far far more for one
- it is responsible for providing expensive hardware with voltage
- if it gets it wrong it could easily ruin the entirety of the PC

Luckily the OP found out the easy way :D

there you go. everything you said in your post is based on your prior knowledge. that's going to mean nothing to the vast majority of normal people.

i must admit i can't think of much else you can buy brand new from respectable shops where the consequences of product failure are so great.

Are you suggesting that we are not normal? Are we weird? :p

Yeah you're right. Of course :)

I don't really think that really low end PSU's like the one included with that case or the Powercool (OcUK branded) units should be stocked... Just my opinion.

heh, bad choice of words. my excuse is that it's late. of course people who know a little bit about hardware are still normal (well almost :p).

yea cit are a crap brand, and they do the annoying habit cheap psu makers do of quoting max power as sustained power, a "600W" cit psu that was in my brothers pre-built computer was actually about 490W, a real 500W psu would have no problem with the system in the OP, my system only pulls 340W wall power with furmark and prime running in tandem, which for an 80% bronze psu can be assumed to be about 272W DC (20% loss)

The '600W' WinPower I have in a box somewhere doesn't even have any power rating printed on it. I dread to think what the actual output is :p Probably closer to half that

Ill apologise if I came off arrogant or offensive, however it annoys me when people diss products/brands for erroneous reasons, if you had asked on here beforehand you would have been told that PSU was insufficient for the system and would fail under load. I have personally built/upgraded many many systems using CiT PSU's as well as many other types and in my experience they are as just as reliable as the likes of Antec or FSP, they are a cheap entry level brand and in no way shape or form near the level of Seasonic/Enermax/Delta or their re-sellers, but they are also significantly better than bargain basement budget PSU's.

It is actually on the side of the PSU, on the pages of most places selling it, and probably on the box too. However instead of English its written in math, again all you had to do was ask.

ok my apology for my childish reply to you, I did not mean to act like a *****, I was just trying to get my point across that I was not bashing the brand, merely pointing out flaws and miss advertising it as a 500W PSU, I did not know prior to buying it that it would not be up for the job and was disappointed when it failed, although knowing now only paying £30 for a case alone is cheap let alone a PSU, well I'v learn't my lesson now and put my hand up for foolish hardware choice. I'm sure these PSU's are fine for very low powered setups, just wish I had the knowledge beforehand and didn't find a forum until after I made the setup.
