Any other civ addicts here? What's everyones fave? I'm playing 4 atm, but keep going back to Call to Power, as I love the future units and undersea cities etc, but 4 has some great features too like the culture-based borders, unit experience etc. Any of the others worth checking out (test of time, call to power 2, civ3 etc)? I've played 1+2 a lot too, but doubt they'd work well under vista or xp :s

Love them ! Have you tried any of the excellent mods for Civ 4 ?
If you haven't, I can recommend
Wolfshanze 1850-1920 Enhancement Mod v2.0
and
Fall from Heaven II

Fall from Heaven II is a fantasy total conversion mod. Its amazing...like a whole new game.

Call to Power was terrible! I'm playing Civ 4 with the add ons. I think they're making a Civ 5 but that won't be out for a while.

I spent a lot of time with civ 2: test of time before civ 4 (I missed the glory of civ 3 :(). ran brilliantly under xp, so inductively I'd assume that the original civ 2 should run nicely as well.. have yet to try it under windows 7 though..

I'm a civ4 addict, and becoming quite a regular poster on civfanatics.

Always up for a civ4 bts game, provided we can continue it/play it.
I have Civ4: Colonization but never played it online.
Also used to play the original and civ3 but never played civ2.

Yay more civ addicts!!! :D (probably my all time most played game/serise)

I LOVE civ4 (especially with bts), its with out a doubt the best of them, just for the AI being a bit more dictated by in game events opposed to its x amount of terms without an invasion so im going to invade you (well thats how civ3 ended up for me).

For me 2 is the second best with the brilliant wonder movies and the difficult ai on the harder levels, though i do have a strange affection for 3 as the Incans....

Anyway 3 runs fine on vista but 2 doesnt, something to do with the way the command prompt cant do full screen (but xp in a vurtual pc can cope with it fine anyway so its not a problem).

I agree with me227 that call to power was pretty lame in comparison to the real ones and i never really got into colonization...

I played a lot of the Civ for Windows recently.

It's so basic, but that's what makes it so fun!

Tanks getting killed by a phalanx is a bit random though :p

Awww, I liked it :( Prefer the way it continues when it gets to the present date, rather than just stopping (technology wise) like some of them do! Imo that's always been a bit of an issue with civ games - the ending always seems a bit of an anti-climax! Not tried the add-ons (BTS etc) yet, are they worth it?

Might dig out civ 2 then, what did you make of test of time?

Phalanxes killing tanks etc is always annoying! They really should have balanced it better!

To better quote the actual talk of back then a battleship getting destroyed by a phalanx was what made them change the combat system for civ2.

Essentially in civ1 every unit has an attack and defence strength. They both roll a dice and then multiply that number by the appropriate strength. A battleship which I think was 22 (or maybe 28) attack and a phalanx which had 2 defence could very rarely end in the phalanx winning.

It was basically the system that had been used in every game up until that point.

And yes, I am a civ fan too :)

I was teethed on civ1 and moved onto civ2 in 96' and loved that, especially all the fantastic mods (US modern civil war mod anyone?) and even played around with modding the look of the units. Colonization took a big part of my life away during all this as well, probably my favourite of all civ games in fact it's still very playable today. Civ3 game along in what, '01 or '02? Played it a bit but I never got into it that much, that along with americas army, halflife and a few other games dragged me over to the FPS/RTS world and I stopped playing civ games for a good while. Civ4 was good, better then civ3 but it still didn't have the sheer simplistic brilliance of the first two.

Oddly enough having gone back to play them both civ1 is a lot easier to get into then civ2 now. I find the graphics in civ2 have dated worse for me then civ1. Maybe lo-res suckiness is easier to deal with then hi-res suckiness :)

Try BTS. There is a mod included called Next War that allows you to go quite far into the future with lots of new units, technologies and buildings. Sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

Ooh that does indeed sound perfect! Gonna go out out now and see if I can find it for sale anywhere! Or is it download?

Yeah I know what you mean, It's like Quake, the graphics looks really dated cos of the low polgon counts and bad textures, but good sprites don't like *quite* so bad! Civ1 seemed to have some graphical glitches though iirc, which is bad for an amiga game - it's not like they had different configurations to worry about compatibility for!

Interesting, I have barely tried any of the mods but that sounds good .

Completely agree, this is my problem with civ2, I can't get into it because of the graphics, civ1 ones are far clearer and easier to get into.

Try slower game speeds, eg. epic or marathon, soldiers are relatively cheaper than on the faster game speeds and you met more turns to move your units around so waging war is easier. If you play at normal or quick I can imagine you get to the end of the tech tree way too soon, those speeds are far more suited to try a space race or cultural victory on anyways, want a more interesting warfare game, then play on epic or marathon, which have more turns for your units to move and they are cheaper in relation to the amount of turns, on marathon actually twice as cheap than on normal . Also sounds like you play a difficulty too low because you reach the end of the tech line.

I always play on the longest time setting, and biggest map size, otherwise it feels too rushed! The patch that added the extra long one in was a great help though!

A lot of people rank Civ2 highly (above Civ3) as it is (relatively) easy to play with an aggressive military conquest style. On first play Civ3 didn't go down well with my clanmates, but I found that once I got in to it, it had a lot more balance than civ1/2. The addition of Culture at first seemed annoying but I later discovered that it helped to make more city improvements worthwhile etc rather than just being things you ignored.

I've inherited Civ 4 complete, but I've yet to play it.

only civ i ever liked was civ 1, don't have it any more and i dont think it runs on win 7 x64 :(

still find it odd that even in civ 4 a mace man could destroy my helicopter :/

+1, yes yes big maps, slow time, I am like that with all these kinds of games.
Anybody play GalCiv 2 ? You can make some insanely large spacemaps in that one.

Also,
Civ>Civ4>Civ2>>>>>>Civ3
