Civic Type-R ...

I assume its an EP3?

The FN2 is the newer model. EP3 is the older one.

I'm also in the same boat, car being changed in August, so I'm trying to decide between a tidy EP3 or the newer FN2. I've got a lower budget, £12,000 max, so an EP3 would be easier to get in my budget, but still tempted by the newer model. I do like the interior and the overall looks of the newer one, I know it's a marmite thing, girlfriend hates the look of the new one and likes the older one :p

I have no idea what EP2 and EP3 are besides guessing they're variations of a Type R but when looking recently for a new car myself I did consider a Type R but bottled it in the end for practicalal reasons and went for a Mondeo (I have my bikes for my performance needs)

Anyway, looked at a few type R's at car people and they do seem tidy cars but just posting now as it seems your budget is around £15k? if so hows this one look?

EP2 is the Civic Sport in the previous shape (what Tim has now). EP3 is the Type-R variant of the EP2 and there is a facelift version available (small touches). The FN2 is what you just posted, which is the Type-R version of the new shape European Civic. The FD2 is the current Japanese Type-R (import only) and the DC5 is the current shape Integra Type-R (import only).

The problem here is people are seeing the FN2 as a Type-R, when it isn't a good as Type-R as the EP3 and ultimately the EK9 and DC2 which are developed to be trackable fast road cars. Tim isn't after the raw Type-R, he wants a newer faster car that's an upgrade from his EP2 and has as much space. I think the FN2 fits his spec, but there could be better options for £12-£15k.

true, but why spend double the price for something which, if anything, is inferior to the EP3...

i think he should try the EP3 out first and go from there, if he likes it, great, 6-7k saved!

if he's not keen, FN2 time.

I think Dup pretty much summed it up, I do want something fun, and the way the Current gen FN2 felt was great to me, I'm going to find a local EP3 today and try and book a test drive for tomorrow. My gf loves my current EP2 and loved the FN2 big style, as she'll be a named driver and driving it a bit, its nice that she likes both, makes things easier :p hehe

Whether or not the FN2 lives up to the Type-R moniker, I don't know, but thats what it says on the tin so thats what I'm going with! As much as said above, I do want fun, I want power, I want the firmer sportier ride, but probably not as raw as Dup, Tim, Danza etc.. want it, maybe the FN2 is a good compromise of everything I'm looking for, but until I have driven an EP3 and possibly DC5 (£800ish insurance, v the £500ish of the CTR's, harder to source parts if needed etc.. or maybe I'm being overly dramatic! :)

ci_newman, what kinda tax bracket does the DC5 fall into mate?

With vtec engines, especially the harder tuned ones as in the CTR and ITR, whats a "safe" mileage really? I know they are designed to be able to take more abuse than a Spanish Waiter, but is there any sort of time when they start to lose thier bite a bit?

Cheers!

I think you're being over dramatic about the DC5. Take it for a test drive and see, you've already said you can get one cheaper than what you are prepared to spend on a civic so your insurance will be more than covered. What's more civics are just so common now, I'd want something different.

It depends on the car with regards to tax. Some have been imported and SVA'd in a nice bracket, others haven't. It's something to enquire about with the owners.

1) Registered as PLG, no emission levels recorded on Registration Certificate = cheapest TAX currently £185 (12 months) rising to £190 in March 2009.

2) Registered using later model report stating CO2 emissions of 223g/km = currently Band F £210 (12 months), changing to Band K and rising on the 13th March 2009 to £215, then to £245 in March 2010.

3) Registered using early model report stating CO2 emissions of 234g/km = currently Band G £400 (12 months), changing to Band L and rising on the 13th March 2009 to £415, then to £425 in March 2010.

That nasty......!

Why would he do that?

No idea, show off the car, make me wanna buy one?

Just got back from driving a new Civic Type R. Like it a lot, although it did feel a bit rough compared with the Focus. Not sure if I could live with one. I kept changing before VTEC so he told me to hang back from a car, floor it and not change till I hit the limiter. They appear to be pretty well priced considering it is a Honda.

Didn't like the dash, and was taking a while to get use to the gearbox/clutch which I found uber-unforgiving. It was either a perfect gear change or a rather large power shunt.

Yeah, the ride did feel rough, but I was prepared for that, and it really didn't bother me, my current car is hardly what I'd call soft, and in some environments and ways it felt less rigid than mine.

Each to thier own, but I loved the dash, and found the gear changes like 2nd nature, some of the down changes could have been a bit smoother, but i'm sure that was just me needing some more time with it :)

Glad you enjoyed it all said and done though, looking forward to the EP3 tomorrow :)

Jeez, how are u gettin all these test drives? I just literally went to the Honda garage to test drive a Type R, they clearly weren't keen, but said to come bk on saturday and i could go out in one.

Renault weren't keen to let me try a Clio 197 and came out with the "you have to be 24 to drive it" BS, but once i got talking to the guy and he saw i knew what i was talking about, he said "ok, well come back on tuesday and you can go out in it then".

Ford weren't hugely happy about letting me test a Focus ST, but again said it'd be ok if i came back on saturday, provided they hadn't sold it (they only had one at the dealer, all the sales people were with other customers and the manager was currently out in the only ST).

I don't understand. I composed myself properly - i didn't go in there like a retard saying "y0 mate, letz av a go in ur Focus mate, yeh?". But none of the dealers seemed THAT happy about even giving me a ride in one. Admittedly they were very busy (surprisingly?) and had no sales staff in...

You really need to work the engine to get the most out of it - if you don't rev high it'll feel gutless. Gearchanges I personally found very easy; the gearbox is nice and quick, you can (with practice) change extremely quickly.

Car seems very reliable so far - done 15k in mine with no issues. The only think I don't like is various dash rattles and squeaks when going over a bad bit of road - this is pretty much standard on the car though, but it is annoying. I could put it into the dealer to be investigated, but I don't fancy 2 days in a Honda Jazz so I'm just living with it. The ride is firm but not harsh; however don't go with the optional 19" alloys, you'll rattle your teeth out within a week.

Economy is okay but by no means great - averaging 29mpg around town. Overall fairly economical for what it is. I really like mine, but won't be looking to extend my lease when it ends.
