Civilisation IV Tips

There are some fantastic tips in this thread!

I've been playing since release and even I'm learning :P Will deffinately have to get it all out again and re-install :D

Where is the best place to get all the Civs from (cheapest) I have lost all my disks :(

Ah if you had waited i could have lent you out one of my copies (I have 3, the original, the gold collection on dvd with all the expansions and now have it on steam for mac so there's no point in having the dvd's) :)

Got to say Wow Biohazzard sounds like you've played like I have over the last 5 years.... (its nearly 5 years since its been released!) I do agree that financial is one of the best traits in the game as you are able to hold a powerful cottage economy from earlier in the game than your rivals, but im a bigger fan of the creative trait as the second option (making the best nation for me the Dutch) as it sounds like you do a similar thing with building wonders for cultural power...

I always forget there's many different ways to play the game it's self but only a few simple aims to win ;)

i've loaded it back up too, and it appears I was talking pish about how to autoattack..

fishing about to see what I'm doing wrong or forgot :/

sorry.

pingwing - yeah I played it quite extensively then gave it up for total war games. I've had some awesome games and decent online matches but spent too much time on it, got fed up of it a bit. I've played civ games quite a lot since I was about 7 or 8, so thats nearly 20 years of strategy and stack smashing. Love strategy, hate stacks nows.

Not sure if civ5 is 100% grabbing me yet. I'll get it, but don't know how much time i'll give it. Hopefully not too much! Can't afford to these days :p

I don't think i've picked another country apart from the US. Just got into the habit of playing as them since Civ 2!

The only problem is I never recognise the city names when I picked a different civ, so I can never remember them on the map. Probably missing out on loads. :o

Ah sorry had it wrong in my head there are 4 in total not 4 expansions. You forgot Colonization, which I havent played yet.

I didn't forget colonization.

Its not technically anything to do with the Civ IV line up / series, although it does run on the engine civ engine. Its a standalone game, and its actually the worst pile of crap I've played from firaxis/sid since railroads.

I played the original Col on my 486 and it was brilliant, I did hope that the new colonization would live up to it... but it didn't somehow.

A neat trick i've learned is to build, at the start of the game, standard improvements on bonus resources, e.g. Mine on a hills with pig (=growth+hammers), Farm on plains vinyard (=growth+gold), cottage on sugar (=growth+gold).

In the early game these can be quite useful, 'pighillmine' being my fav. Makes for slightly faster growth with good build at 2F3H.. adn then once the city's up and running re-improve as required.

Then for a handy military.. first warrior always gets shock and cover promotions from any fights with barbs, and next warrior starts down the medic route... later the first great general = medic promotion.

Don't forget to build an early fishingboats, and send it off scouring the map.. if your lucky you'll get it to circumnavigate the world, and it's a handy way to realtively safely find other civs.

And finally, for newbie gaming, go for Inca's. Financial, Industrious, the UU walks all over Archers, and the UB builds culture. Basically this civ is great for proping up inexperianced players during the early years and learning curves.

..and then civfanatics.com, and watch out for CiV.. personally I can't wait :)

I disagree.

Spiritual and financial or aggressive is my favorite.

Spiritual is very powerful when used right, particularly with Montezuma (SPI/AGG), and his Sacrificial Alter UB.

Every 5 turns you can swap your civics with no penalty, which allows very easy swapping in and out of Slavery and Caste to whip stuff with 50% less anger duration, and still run a Specialist Economy alongside that.

You can also swap to Vassalage / Theocracy while bullding troops (in 5 turns you can get out 2-3 troops per city with Slavery, whip units on turn one, overflow might create a second, whip again on turn 5, change back to Beurocracy / Organised religion and make a round of buildings. Having the Sacrificial alter means 50% less anger duration = twice as much whipping possible.

In the early game these can be quite useful, 'pighillmine' being my fav.

A grassland iron is much nicer, but more rare and takes longer to get. Pighillmine = 2 food, 3 hammers, Pighillpasture = 5 food, 1 hammer, which is one extra unit for faster workers and settlers. But if youre either Expansive or Imperialistic, then pighillmine is always better than a pasture.

I picked up Civ4 recently and am trying to get my head around how to play it. Started on the easiest 'settler' difficulty and managed to build a large city and got all the techs and units etc by the time I reached 500 turns. On the slightly harder settings im struggling to build up a city before being walked over by the AI.

How come the AI gets so many great persons and grows cities so quickly? It seems painstakingly slow to get my city building units/buildings in the early stages of the game. Is there an optimum research path I should take in the early stages? Is it always worthwhile waging war with the other AI Civs? Or to sit back and get max culture points?

Long learning curve ahead!

It's been a long time since I played vanilla Civ (Mostly play Fall from Heaven 2 or Colonization: AOD) but I remember workers and chopping being very important at the start. Basically it revolves around wood chopping for early production so forested areas were necessary to start. Worker > Chop > New Worker > Chop some more > Settler. Like I said though, it's been a while since I touched the game so I can't remember the specifics.

Also, in case you didnt know, cities wont grow while building workers or settlers in them. I don't know what the pros do, but I build a warrior or equivalent first to allow my city to grow in size before I build a worker.

(That is probably really bad advice!)
