Clarkson's Farm

I think I know where Jono8 is coming from, basically any hurdle he had he just went and paid for it.
Oh I need one of those so I'll buy one where the vast majority of farmers would have to hire one or can't afford.
I was gobsmacked he didn't go and buy a Combine Harvester for £250,000 when he needed one and I'll be very surprised if he hasn't got his own by Series Two.

However it was absolutely superb and made me realise the crap farmers have to go through.

Thank you! Also, complaining about losses/money, but buys a massive Lamborghini tractor :p

It wasnt a big deal, and i truly enjoyed the whole series and it made me laugh a LOT. However there were just certain points when it came to complaining about the financials of the whole thing that felt awkward.

surely purchases of machinery to run the business are tax deductable?

This is just silly.

You know that is not what i am expecting. I just would have appreciated a little more tact, that is all.

I get what you are saying. I got the same impression from the show. I enjoyed it, even laughed out loud a few times. But, none of it felt in any way genuine. I think it would have been one of the best shows ever, if He had made an honest to god effort. But, there were too many times where he went into the absurd. Showing that he didn't really care one way or the other how it went. They didn't need to make it so obvious that nothing really mattered.

It's worth watching just to see Kaleb destroying him every 5 minutes.

There was definitely some good banter between the two of them considering the age difference.

Yeah i honestly thought he would have purchased one too considering all the other equipment he's bought. Especially as it massively delayed harvesting his barley and rapeseed.

There's also the potential that they're not a stock item and by the time he realised he needed one, it was too late?

I'd expect most farmers who have such a large estate too would have sufficent cash to purchase a combi even if its on finance

Yeah quite possibly the case. And with all the world manufacturing and delivery problems, that could have added to the troubles of sourcing one.

It's almost an essential piece of machinery if you're growing any sort of crop. Whilst that other farmer was kind enough to lend his combi to Clarkson, he had to give up probably ~18 hours of his day to drive it. I'm sure he wouldn't have done that for free?

I follow Dale Farm (in the Peak District - not the traveller site in Essex!) Vlog on Youtube (mainly as it's just a few miles from me). Interesting watch and shows the harsh realities of (mainly) sheep farming.
Obviously you are not going to get TV quality, but this is real people end of the day!

Watching Clarkson, I never for one minute thought he would be out of pocket. I think the show did a pretty good job of highlighting the harshness of farming - for an entertainment show.

It's quite common for contractors to come and do a lot of the work with heavy machinery rather than have a 1/4 mil asset sat unused most of the year that you need to store and maintain. That's what Kaleb's business is, although not at the combine level.

This show was alright. Some of it was interesting, but there was too much of that really boring Clarkson staged thing where he suggests there is a certain way of doing things that (purportedly to him) 'clearly makes sense' and then he executes it terribly acting like it's someone else's fault or surprised that it doesn't work.

Driving a tractor down a narrow lane.

Not doing the tramlines.

Digging a pond and wrecking the land.

It's just ****ing boring and I can't believe people can watch the same 'joke' over and over and not get bored of it.

Ok reading some of these responses I might reconsider :)
This may have been posted already in the thread, but I watched it earlier and I shall be using my free Prime trial soon just to watch this. Never bothered with their Top-Gear-a-like, but this seems to have struck a chord even with a lot of the farming folk I follow on Twitter (I'm not a farmer, but I have a border collie if that counts?)

Clarkson has the advantage of deep pockets to subsidise his hobby and mistakes, but seems to have somehow managed to be educational at the same time as producing an entertaining TV show. That's quite a neat trick!
