Clarkson's Farm

Do you remember how many viewers the original top gear got compared to the entertainment version?

There in lies the issue with making a program which reportedly cost millions to produce. They need people to actually watch it across the globe. They paid Clarkson £5m alone didn’t they?

The entertainment version of top gear was sold across the globe and made a fortune. The early era of top gear had limited relevance outside the U.K.

Oh absolutely, at its most base level, you appeal to the masses because thats where the profits are. Thats why Mcdonalds is more successful than better burger places and why "mainstream" music acts are more successful than other music and why Mrs Browns Boys has more viewers than Chernobyl.

Thats an interesting viewpoint and when you list those shows above, theres an obvious one which is even linked with Clarkson. Top Gear. Remember the early seasons of Top Gear? Which were full of useful actual car info and then compare it to the later seasons of the show where it had changed from being informative to being about the laughs.

actually, I'd say top gear went through 3 main phases if you wanna look at it like that :

1 . as you say, useful car info , foot on bumper dry toalk down to viewer (pre internet etc yadad yadda different times )

2. The 'peak'. actually less dry more about the trio, less talkin at the viewer more 'sharing the exerience' probably peaked at or shortly after the polar ice special, i.e. the FIRST special (see my point above! )

3. Then they took that and hammed it up, and the decline and the shouts of 'scripted' etc it was just becoming stupid, so obviously set piece farces. Agree with me that the more 'honest' specials are far better than the stupid ones of the later series.

fantastic stuff.

really enjoyed the first series so heres hoping the 2nd is as good.

Kaleb is a great foil for Clarkson although i have to admit i love Charlie for constantly bringing him back to reality.

so much potential
