Clarkson's Farm

Haven't finished it yet but still enjoying it.

What was with that horrible person who answered the door at No.10?!

They put a huge steel knocker on the door and then someone uses said knocker and apparently woke up the half asleep guard who then threatened them. Thats about it really.

Yayyyyy!

I presume the actual cost of the farm is pittance in terms of what other flagship show costs. Even if they pay for all material and running cost on the farm £140k, plus their wages and salary for being in the show. There’s only like 5 of them as “main characters”. It would be much less than hundreds of millions for shows like Lord of the rings.
Oh for sure. Clarkson's Farm must be way below the average cost of an Amazon Prime series. I wonder how much money the farm actually makes (or loses) if they took into account the fee the farm gets from Amazon.

Even if it only breaks even from actual farming it basically makes the whole show free aside from paying the production company.

I'm just glad that Caleb and his Dad seem comfortable with the whole thing and that they aren't just being abused for amusement sake.. There actually seems a warmth to Kaleb and Jeremy and that they have a good laugh together..

Gerald seem genuine when he said the crew and everyone had been so nice..
My favourite is Charlie. Whether it's scripting or an accident, the comedy element is perfectly contrasted with his realistic expectations, it even adds to how funny it is..

I get the feeling that Clarkson actually enjoys working the place as he seems much better at using the machinery and genuinely gutted about the animals. Obviously you have to throw in half the fake stuff to make it watchable but it's good.

Caleb and his dad? I didn't think we'd seen Caleb's dad in the show? We saw his brother in one episode but not his dad?

Yeah I like Charlie too. Honest and polite but with a sense of humour. The negotiation between the two farmers being such an example. :D

I thought Gerald was his dad? He has the same last name and I could swear that was mentioned in S1

Having just googled it they aren't related at all

Nah, just same last name. "Gerald Cooper: the farm's "head of security" and a specialist in the construction and maintenance of dry stone walls, which form 40 miles of boundaries on the farm. His conversations with Clarkson are amiable but often incomprehensible due to his strong West Country accent.[15] He helps Clarkson harvest the farm's grain, which he has been doing for over fifty years. He is not related to Kaleb Cooper. During the third series, he is diagnosed with prostate cancer and takes a leave of absence from working on the farm."
I think Charlie is great, and I thought he was just the accountant but he seems to knows a heck of a lot about farming for being the “suit”.
He's got the appearance of an accountant but he's the land agent and agronomist. "Charlie Ireland: sarcastically referred to by Clarkson as "Cheerful Charlie", Ireland is a professional agronomist and land agent". :)

So basically, Charlie "Farming Bible" Ireland.

It always amazes me how Charlie can seemingly turn up to Diddly Squat, see something going on, and know instantly precisely what the requirements are whether it's H&S, paperwork, food preparation guidelines, he seems to have a very good recall of applicable laws/rules/requirements.

Just like me when I roll up to work, "what the **** you doing there?" "cant do that, NSF will be up our arse" "yo, John, why you not done the food and fridge/freezer temps, they need doing by 11am"

Charlie for sure knows is stuff and is also my favourite of the lot.

I’m not sure if it’s obvious to just me or everyone else but the show is very scripted. Sure the dialog isn’t scripted but the show absolutely has writers and most of the sequences are pre-planned and there is a clear story thread running through the whole season.

It’s really obvious which bits are captured in the moment and which bits are very pre planned. The obvious giveaway is basically where there is any regard for health and safety is very pre planned.

That said, it’s a great show.

That’s called being good at the job

Amazon will probably pay the "cast" a bonus depending on how much the show makes. Likely to be millions, but likely mostly going to Jeremy.

The farm cannot fail really, it has too much money backing it now.

Charlie is probably already quite wealthy too being a consultant with that much knowledge.

I have noticed his cars getting better throughout the seasons.

Of course the farm can't fail, because there will be no show otherwise. Regardless of whether Clarkson is footing all the bills or not.

There is certainly 2 type of fee/salary going on. One is paying everyone doing the farm work, and the other being the Cast in the show. In a way, as an employee, you are doing 1 job, paid twice.

The cost of running the farm, depends on Clarkson's contract with Amazon I guess, it could be that Amazon is footing all the bills or it could be that Amazon is only liable for any deficit should the farm runs into the negative or Amazon provides the Farm say, minimum £100,000 (or whatever) fee regardless of the profit/loss to the farm. That we don't know. Or percentage in relation to viewing figures.

All in all, the show is a success and I think in this show, everybody wins. Amazon gets a great show out of it from very low cost compared to other headline shows. Clarkson gets a job when his car stuff is winding down, everyone in the show gets paid well. An added bonus is that it shows the public like me, the behind the scenes into UK farming, everything from weather to financial problems to political hurdles and red tape and stupid council members at times.

Completely agree with your last point. I have learned so much about farming and the struggles with weather, politics etc that I otherwise would never have found out about. I would say that WODC don't exactly win from this show! I'm surprised they haven't tried an injunction against the show being broadcast as they don't come out of it looking positive in any way.

The farm is making money regardless of what Amazon is paying for (like that silly hovercraft skit or hire the weed munching machine).

They also didn’t cover all the revenue streams, only the produce going through the farm. I doubt they included all the costs either mind.

The shop will be set up as a separate business and sells things produced by others for a tasty profit, the farm gets government subsidies which are not mentioned, hawkstone beer investment etc etc.

I’m pretty sure the likes of Gerald and Caleb also contract for other farms in the area.

What I’m trying to say is, they’ll probably be fine without Amazon money and they’ll be making bank with it.

I doubt Amazon has anything to do with the paying and running of anything. I was always under the assumption that Clarkson was a big part of bringing back Top Gear in his style using his own production company..
I would assume that he makes and owns all of this and just straight up sells it to amazon for a fee.
The Grand tour was made by him and Andy Willman, and Clarksons farm is made by Willmans new company also..

Kaleb does indeed contract out, https://www.kalebcoopercontracting.co.uk/about-us. I think he said in series 1 that he's farmed other farms in the immediate vicinity of Diddly Squat, before he set up his contracting business.

Don't know about Gerald though. I'm sure all the walls and fences Jezza damages with his amazing ideas probably keeps Gerald busy at Diddly Squat!
