Classic old school games worth playing?

1) I now feel old. I get the general impression from most of this forum that the posters are of a slightly older persuasion so it surprises me when someone says they're 19!
2) It sounds like the OP is not going to like the really old games as they don't really stand up to today's blockbusters. I can over look dated graphics but the yoof of today and all that, I'm not so sure :)
3) The 2 games mentioned in the OP are run and gun FPSs. I would suggest the original CODs.

dont worry your not the only old fogey here, I would also suggest early CODs like COD2 I hear that people still play it online.

Evil man I dont have a copy -_-

Wow... I'm feeling old now as well based on what some are considering to be old school  all relative though of course

For me it would be stuff like:

Commander Keen
Jetpack
Original Duke Nukem games (and Duke Nukem 3d at the top end I guess)
Jazz Jackrabbit
The first Doom games + Unreal
Soldier of Fortune
Theme Hospital + Dungeon Keeper
Transport Tycoon
Sim City 2000
Jill of the Jungle
Little Big Adventure
Beneath a Steel Sky
Day of the Tentacle

Or what about one of those brilliant (ly cheesy) games when they first started with the whole pre-rendered background with scanned in footage of an actor type games like the Tex Murphy series (Under a Killing Moon anyone?)

I've been playing Quake 2 with a mod that improves the graphics, sorry I can't find the mod I used.

It's still a awesome game but I notice it is very easy in comparison to modern games.

We're on the same page with these! Apogee platformers and Lucasarts point 'n' clicks FTW!

Wow really strange!!! I posted the post quoted above from work, then came home and switched on my PC and guess what game series has just been added to Steam? Tex Murphy!!! How weird, I hadn't thought about those games for ages until this thread made me think about it and now they show up!

Sounds like the law of attraction in action.

Also all Command and Conquer games up to C&C3.

On that note.. GAME has the Ultimate Collection for £4.99

Thats a hell of a lot of hours gameplay there from campaigns alone... don't even want to think about the potential of dabbling with other modes

Fair warning, it is an origin code (in a box) and unfortunately the collection does include command and conquer 4 :P

If you happenned to enjoy CNC renegade I'd encourage you to checkout Renegade X, which is free.... and to the fellow gog nuts they seem to have some big sale starting today, a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread is discounted (UT2k4, NWN2 etc)

p.s. cut out the "old" comments your spoiling it :D

/creaks off

Master of Orion 2, you can get it from gog.com for few £.
And if you think you own the ai already, you can always add yourself a handicap ( make custom race and add some not so fun options :D ).

Ive heard of most of the games mentioned but never played them,Been youtubing them and some of them look like very cool. I can't quite put my finger on it but some of these older games while they don't have the best graphics they seem to be able to create an amazing atmosphere that you don't seem to find as much these days.

It's called "quality and passion", some modern devs should try it ;)

A long time ago you see a game actually had to be really good to do well, because a lot of titles had zero (or close to) marketing budget and relied a lot on word of mouth (even more so in the pre-internet days)... Heck back in the good old days you'd see a badass game at a friends house that they'd been raving about and get them to write a copy of it onto one of the floppy discs you brought over with you :D That was the whole business model - the first "chapter" of the game was pretty big and completely free and they encouraged people to spread it around if they liked it

Nowadays you just spend a few million on a massive marketing campaign and throw together another cookie-cutter game with no soul full of bugs and watch the endless queues of dudebro's queuing up at 12am to get the latest copy of whatever the review sites you paid off told them to

 Wow, I'm bitter aren't I? (and old)

Well, if peple are throwing in games from the '90s (and very good they are too), what about some relatively recent indie games, most of them with an old-school vibe.
I recommend all of the following:

Atomic Zombie Smasher
Banished
Binding of Isaac
Dwarfs!
Fez
FTL Faster than Light
Gunpoint
Hotline Miami
N 2.0
Not the Robots
Papers Please
Plants vs Zombies
Retro City Rampage
Reus
Risk of Rain
SCP - Containment Breach
Slender Series
Space Pirates and Zombies
Spelunky
Super Crate Box
Super Meat Boy
Vvvvvv

or some Rogue-likes:

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Nethack Vulture or Nethack Falcom
Rogue Legacy
Sword of the Stars - The Pit
Teleglitch
Tome

and someting that is really, really good from the '90s:

Doom 1 + 2 + Ultimate + Plutonia + TNT+ ScoreDoom as well as Heretic and Hexen together with the Oblige level generators and brutal Doom 1.9.

If you have any trouble running any of the older games like x-wing - then DOSBOX should help you out via emulation.

I'll give you my top 3.

1)Morrowind
2)Morrowind
3)Morrowind

A quick visit to the Morrowind Nexus for mods and your good to go.

morrowind is worth a bash, still very much playable and the graphics [apart from the faces] aren't so outdated as to stop you enjoying it.

morrowind might be a little trickier, i'm in the same boat as yourself with it, i hear folks ranting about how good it is but sadly the timeshock of playing it means i cant stay long to get hooked by the [apparently excellent] gameplay and story.

if you fancy a shooter, i recall fun times playing against my step dad in joint ops, dunno if there's still servers around for it but still ok. recall the box came with a keyboard overlay for all the hotkeys, brilliant idea. its of the style of flashpoint/arma except not utterly confusing to control.

Morrowind with mods is an excellent choice. It's the only game that I think I've played where you can go literally anywhere.

Another one that is more recent is Time Shift.
