I've always used nail polish remover. Had no problems with it thus far.

Can be used for so many other electronics as well. I frequently clean my earphones with it and a toothbrush keeps the sound clear if there is any unwanted..... bodily candles in there.
I use Arcti clean oooooohhhhhhhhhh orange freshness.
I've used vodka and a lint-free cloth in the past with no problems. Ahem.
I use neat isopropyl alcohol also, bought from eBay for about £5 I think. I've had the bottle easiily 2 years and it's only half gone. Once you see how effortlessly IPA removes heatsink compound, nothing else will compare.
I used to use Akasa TIM cleaner, but I dislike how slowly it dries and leaves a greasy film. I used to have to wipe across the cleaned area with something dry to dry it off, which isn't always ideal.
