Cleaning your ears

I know you're not asking me, but when my ears were microsuctioned I couldn't hear anything out of my left ear for most of the morning until late afternoon as the wax moved - i'd tried otex peroxide drops to no avail. On suction one ear had gooey wax clogging it up entirely which took an age to suck out, whilst the other which I hadn't put drops in had a large solid plug which came out in one go. £60 for both ears in a small clinic in Bexley.

Maybe the loud noise from the suction damaged your hearing giving you temporary threshold shift. Those suction devices are very loud for somethhin that is directlynon your ear.

Im a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to cleaning my ears, i reckon i must clean them twice a day, i hate the waxy feeling inside.

It wierd i know.

I also find it strangely satisfying when i clean my ears too.

Same though try wetting one end in warm water, it goes from strangely satisfying to a feeling that can only be described as "earturbating"

I used to get blocked ears a lot requiring trips to the GP to get them syringed.

I discovered this device a few years back though that works equally as well and you can do it yourself safely. Obviously if you have a perforated ear drum don't use is the general advice.

That's what I said I've got a few posts up, a bit of warm water in a syringe and squirt it into the ears.
The first time I did it I tipped my head over towards the sink with water in the bowl and I nearly vomited when I saw what came out.

Them syringes are AMAZING! I had a blocked ear for about 2 weeks and it was doing my head in. The doctor said they no longer do ear syringing and prescribed me some olive oil drops (50ml olive oil for £8+) and also some other drops. I used them for 2 weeks and it made no difference. Although i'm sure it will have helped to soften the wax.

I ordered that syringe off Amazon with Prime and it turned up the next day and in 10 mins my ear was unblocked! That feeling when you see all the crap come out and you can finally hear again after 2 weeks is amazing. Also you can hear high pitched sounds better than you have ever been able to. It took a while to get used to it.

This is the exact one I used and for £5 its great value.

Hi,

Sorry for late reply, ears were pretty grim had used otex so was softening result was immediate improvement for me, along with pics of inner ear looking clean as !

Cheers

Is that the stuff that crackles and pops in your ear...SOOOOOOO satisfying.

that feeling really freaked me out the first time. Also it didn;t come out for hours (until I went to bed) then my ear had the popping feeling and tonnes oozed out!

Gross update, after nearly a month I can finally hear out of the affected ear. I stopped using the drops as my Mrs couldn't visibly see a block, assumed it was something more serious or the block had gone further down.

Quick trip to a walk-in and all sorted. I think someone on this thread or another recommended using a water ear irrigation machine - highly recommended (what they used). The drops had at least worked and made the machines's job a lot easier.

I use Cerumol ear drops which contains Arachis oil and Chlorobutanol. I think it's better than Otex and most other products.

Avoid cleaning ears with buds, it's not recommended because it's effectively dangerous.

Your ears produce wax for a reason. It clears itself so there is no need for the majority to do anything. For those that have a problem a couple of drops of light oil will dissolve the wax and clear it.
You should not put cotton buds or any other thing in the ear as it can cause damage. On the rare occasion that there is a problem a routine visit to your GP's should be enough.
Overuse of oil drops will only cause the body to produce more wax than it would normally do.

The last time I had my ears syringed was about 16 years ago, and I recall the nurse saying that the amount of wax that came out was among the most she'd ever seen. I couldn't believe it either, there was literally spoons of the stuff. I, too, used olive oil for about a month to soften the wax before it was 'hosed' out.

Nowadays, my surgery seems reluctant to syringe patients ears, and as I'm probably more than due again, I might start adding a little olive oil a day and see how it goes.

Don't use cotton buds or stick anything into the ear.

Yea because you really aren't supposed to remove the wax unless there is a reason to. It's a natural barrier against nasty things which can infect the ear. As soon as you clean it out the glands will start working overtime to replace it.

What about excessive wax? If I left mine unchecked, I would literally have wax pouring out :p.

Used to sometimes get blocked when I was younger but drops always cleared them up in a few days, they've been fine since and that was maybe 15-20 years ago.

Generally speaking, I avoid putting anything in my ear, they're best left alone unless there's an actual problem.

So thanks to this thread I tried the microsuction process at a place local to my office today. Normally around this time (every few years) because of some reason I start to lose hearing because of wax buildup and then put drops in which make my completely deaf before syringing, and the new machines they have which pump water in are really uncomfortable compared to the old method. I'd usually be a week or two putting drops in each ear which meant being nearly fully deaf and then after ages of 'syringing' the wax would come out.

Anyway, I walked in today to the microsuction place, the guy took a look at one ear, a bit of a suck or two, put some drops in, then a massive bit of wax the size of a baked bean came out. Other side, same thing. I was in and out within 10 minutes and although it cost me £35 per ear (central London) it was totally worth it. So, thank you for those who recommended this method of cleaning out the wax. :)

There is one near me, I think I will book an appointment. I absolutely hate using drops because they just block my ears even worse as you say. I think my wax is worse at the start of the hayfeaver season, are you a sufferer?

Why would your mate remove wax from his cars? Also a car health site? Seems a bit OTT to me?

I clean my car often, but I put wax on it, not take it off.

I think you need to have words with your senses!

I use the free air machine at Sainsbury's petrol station to blast them out, make sure you set the presure as high as it goes! Morrison's one works too, but costs 50p.
