The weight of expectation rests heavy on the broad shoulders of this, the new £16,500 Renaultsport Clio 197, replacement for the much-loved, supercar-humbling Clio 182, Cup and Trophy. The successor to the king of hot hatches goes on sale in June and is bigger and heavier than the car it replaces. Yet it boasts only a modest power increase, up from 180 to 194bhp (the '197' moniker refers to its power in PS), so does this mean that Renault has fumbled?

Fair point, but i bought the Evo for speed, handling and fun my Evo 9 only cost £3k more than that too

its pretty hideous compared to the old clio, but its sales will rest a lot on how it drives! anything like the old 182 and it will sell like hotcakes!

Looks are okay, will probably grow on me like the last clio did.

But its too heavy, and too expensive. Gimme a 172 cup or a 182 trophy over one any day.

Too expensive and too heavy.
For that money, you can buy a new Impreza if you look in the right place.

Not happy about the fact it's got less than 200bhp. With the extra weight it's carrying over the 182 I was expecting in the region of 210+ to keep the performance up. Also, the brakes on it seem overkill to me - EIGHT pots up front on what is essentially a basic hot hatch!

Finally, I'm not entirely happy with how it looks either. Maybe when I see a few in the metal I may start warming to it. All in all though it's certainly not making me want to chop in my 172!

i just got a 04 plate normal clio (does 47mpg, better than my mazda 17 if i was lucky) anyway! i think the 182 looks much nicer tho i image the next or next next face lift of the newer clio will look more grr
